For anyone in the Toronto area looking for a bit of Cinematic Christmas Spirit this December, I’d highly reccomend The Bloor Cinema’s annual Holiday Movie.
If you’re a member, the screening is free. If you aren’t a member, you can become a member at the door for a mere three dollars. They serve free cookies, coffee, egg nog, and warm cider, and the movie selection is always a holiday classic (usually either MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET, WHITE CHRISTMAS, or this year’s selection IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE).
While many may say “Why bother – these flicks are endlessly played on TV anyway this time of year”, believe me – it’s a bit more fun seeing it on a big screen with a hundred or so fellow festive movie lovers. Last time out, the audience even spontaneously started singing along with “White Christmas” at the end of the movie. You just can’t get that sort of spirit alone in your living room.
The Bloor’s Holiday Movie Night happens Friday, December 19th at 7pm. The Bloor Cinema is located at 506 Bloor Street West, just east of Bathurst.
Thursday December 19th? Is there a break in the space time continuum at The Bloor that will enable it to be Thursday two days in a row?
Sorry, calendar flames are almost as bad as spelling ones, eh? Had someone else do this exact same thing today, so you are in good company.
Sounds like a cool screening though. Of course, it’ll be filled with people who have already seen it because who hasn’t seen this film? I mean who would admit to…not…having…
Oh yeah, that was me. I’ll get to it man. I’ll get to it…B-)
Fixed the date – thanks.
I won’t judge you too harshly for not having seen this, but if that’s the case then I strongly suggest making the first time you see it be on a big screen!
Bob, I’d love to hear your reaction. I know a lot of people who’ve seen it years after they should have (or else years after an initial viewing which they’ve largely forgotten) and were shocked by what the movie actually was. I think it’s one of the greatest American films of all time, and for reasons which have little to do with its misleading reputation as a Yuletide cheerfest.
Bob!!! How can you not have seen this one!!! Gee whiz. It’s a classic!
I’ve never been to holiday screening before at the Bloor but my Mom actually asks me. Maybe I’ll make it out there this year.
Geez, shame me why don’t ya Shannon! It’s just one of those films that indeed is on all the time and I keep thinking “I’ll get to it”. I know the story pretty well, know most of the big scenes, etc.
MovieMan0283, I know it isn’t the sweet huggable film many assume it to be…But I have to say that I haven’t been a huge fan of the Frank Capra films I’ve seen so far – I’m not dismissing him of course, but it’s another factor.
But I will commit that I will see this film by end of year. Maybe even at The Bloor if possible (that evening is free at the moment, but there’s a bunch of other things going on).
Now leave me alone! Sniff…
