So for those of you who don’t know, I’m a rather avid DVD collector. I have more than anyone really needs, but I’d rather have a movie I know I love to distract me for two hours instead of my TV getting wasted on following some D-List celebrity around and watch them act foolish.
One of the quirks to my DVD collecting, is my taste for special editions. I don’t need all the bells and whistles for every title I buy (not much need to know how the stunts in DODGEBALL were achieved)…but for those movies that blew my hair back, I often want to have the best edition possible. The problem of course, is that this particular waiting game can be a real test of patience. I’m talking about the patience it takes to download the complete Dave Matthews Band bootlegs on a dial-up connection.
Once in a while I’ve snapped and immediately regretted it (KILL BILL comes to mind)…other times the wait has been well worth it. I give you BLADE RUNNER as my exhibit A.
BLADE RUNNER was one of the first movies released on DVD. It had no special features, which was odd for such a landmark film – especially one with two edits that audiences tend to love and hate in equal measure. I became a fan of this film about ten years back, but have never jumped on buying the DVD since I always felt there would be a special edition coming “eventually”. Well finally after ten years of waiting, “eventually” has arrived.
I spent much of this weekend watching the three-and-a-half hour making-of doc, and every bit of information learned was worth the wait. The interviews are fresh, thorough, and entertaining. If that wasn’t enough to get this particular geek a-tither, the package contains every edit of the movie ever done.
So let this serve as a lesson…rather than give studios your money twice, and sell off your unused skinny editions for a fraction of what you paid, wait it out, and the spoils will be yours in the end!
