  1. I've got my predictions going up every 30 minutes today on Twitter (just for the Big 6; not as thorough as yours!), complete with links to trailers as a refresher for those who saw the nominees ages ago (or a primer for those who haven't seen them at all). If I could make up a list of who I want to see win, it would barely resemble my predictions at all, sadly.

In any case, they'll all be up by 2 p.m. today, if you're curious!

  2. I predict some surprises. Gabby for Best Actress, and Precious for Screenplay, and "Up" to win Best Picture.

  3. @Tom – I finally saw "Precious" for the first time yesterday, and…wow. As much as I love Sandra Bullock and think she's an underrated actress (and could do so much with more serious roles), I've gotta say that I'd be very, very happy to see Gabourey take it. She was extraordinary. That whole movie was extraordinary. I didn't even realize that the incredibly handsome "male nurse" was Lenny Kravitz until after the credits rolled!

As for Up! getting Best Picture? Again, I would be very pleased. I know it makes me rather unpopular in the movie critiquing world, but the only movie of the ten nominees I really and truly do NOT want to see win is Avatar.

If you're betting in an Oscar pool, good luck, and I hope you win! Those would be some memorable upsets.

  4. Man, I wish Parnassus would win Best Art Direction! I've just been assuming Avatar will win that one, since Gilliam's films are never really recognized for anything.

And while I'm pulling for A Serious Man to get Best Original Screenplay, Inglourious Basterds is probably the best choice.

Will you be watching live tonight?

  5. @ Tom: I wouldn't mind seeing Up win, but I'd love to see Inglourious Basterds pick up the gold. I accept that The Hurt Locker is the most likely "good" movie to challenge Avatar for the gold.

@ Ehch: Trust me, you are not alone in your Avatar dislike.

  6. I think my favorite film of the year was Up in the Air, and I'd like to see that one pick up some Oscars, but I'm afraid it will get shut out.

  7. I hope you are wrong about the three short films, there is a lot of money at stake in our office Oscar pool (the shorts are worth the most points since no one has seen them). I am pulling for The New Tenants, The Last Truck…, and French Roast

  8. @ EHCH… I'll definitely take a look-see.

@ Tom… Don't tease me. This has been such a predictable race, that the only thing really pulling me through the night is the possibility of surprises.

@ Alex… I will indeed be watching live, though not live-blogging. I'll hop back on my computer to post a rundown of the winners, and then fire off a short reaction post in the morning.

And if I had a vote, I'd be handing Best Adapted Screenplay to Nick Hornby for AN EDUCATION.

@ Darren… Count me as someone who'd love to see an UP win – I can't think of anything that would make the night more memorable than the first animated Best Picture.

@ Tom… It's a pity the UP IN THE AIR supporting women cancel each other out. Were they not both in the category, I'd wager that one of the two could give Mo'Nique a run for her money!

@ CS… Good luck to you and your potential payday. Like I said – those three were blind guesses.

  9. I don't think that Dr. Parnassus will pick up Art Direction, but what do I know? Nothing. I don't even want to watch, but for the whole keeping up the tradition thing. Sigh. I do hope Avatar wins everything though 🙂 – I know it makes me sound like a fanboy, which I am not…but I do.

  10. I really hope Avatar(or The Blind Side) doesn't win Best Picture.

  11. It's so weird. Avatar is the #1 movie of all time, and yet it's so hard to find a blogger that admits to liking it.

  12. @ Tom… Give it a look, then you can openly tear it to bits in an informed manner.

@ Drehar… During the Oscar episode of my podcast, I claimed I'd quit blogging if THE BLIND SIDE wins.

@ Encore… *raises his hand* Me…right here…count it…I'm a blogger who openly admits to liking AVATAR. A lot.

  13. Mad, I haven't seen "The Blind Side" either. May I have your permission to rip it to bits even without seeing it, or should I watch it?

  14. I also hope you are wrong Mad! Avatar and The Hurt Locker should get minimal awards!!! Avatar has nothing to do in the best picture discussion while the Hurt Locker was badly unrealistic!

  15. @ Tom… My personal rule is this: You can make a joke or two at something you haven't seen. But to rip it apart without predjudice, you must sit and endure every moment of it.

@ Castor… Seems as though I *was* wrong, but not wrong enough for your taste. I wonder just how unrealistic HURT LOCKER is though…I mean Boal was an embedded journalist, no?

@ Casey… Yeah QT didn't look thrilled, especially since he'd already conceded the directing award. Guess he's just gonna have to make another masterpiece!
