“Is a 7 masculine or feminine?”
There is no one correct answer to this divergent question. Still, for Jeanne – the central character in Héléna Klotz’s SPIRIT OF ECSTASY – the question needs to be asked. It is posed just to underline how pointless the question of gender and identity are in the world of high finance.
After all, money doesn’t care about your pronouns – it spends the same for all identities.
SPIRIT OF ECSTASY follows our nonbinary protagonist, Jeanne (singer Claire Pommet) as they try to rise above their station in life. Disenchanted with working class life in a military community, Jeanne slips on an ill-fitting suit and tries to gain attention and opportunity in a high stakes financial firm.
When their boss (Sofiane Zermani) spots just how talented Jeanne is, he offers them a potentially lucrative opportunity. The first question is whether they can produce when it matters most. The next question is whether they can handle all home life distractions by young siblings and old flames.
The world that Jeanne is trying to make their way into is all about image; the right suit, the right watch, the right connections, and the bravado to tie it all together. What’s intriguing is that what allows them to move through and potentially succeed in this world is their individuality.
Their silhouette is a distinct one thanks to the close-cropped hair and the squared shoulders. They may not always belong in the halls they are walking through, but damned if the line and shape of them doesn’t say otherwise.
Opportunities may come, and betrayals may follow, but what ultimately settles the score is having the answer to one simple question – “Who are you, and how did you get here?” It doesn’t matter whether the question is posed by a potential employer or a long lost love, it’s our ability to answer it that will inspire them to clear a path…and perhaps even walk beside us on the way.
