Success! After a bit of a false start on day one, I finally managed to get into the swing of things Friday night at the SUCK Showcase at Dundas Square.
First things first – if you are planning on taking in any of the free events, don’t rely on the info on TIFF’s website. If the the details there were to be believed, this shindig was supposed to get going at 6:30 and go for half an hour. As it were, it started later, and ran for a good long time. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…just be wary if you have other plans.
First up was Tin Star Orphans, who were pretty good in an Old 97s sort of way. They have a song in the film (“Let You Down”) and put on a pretty good show. If there music wasn’t enough to catch my interest, their witty response to a heckler who wanted to hear “Life Is a Highway” certainly did.
After the Tin Star Orphans finished up, the cast of SUCK hit the stage to say a quick hello (including Calico Cooper, wearing red in the photo above). It was pretty cool of them to drop by, but a bit disappointing that they weren’t able to partake in much actual dialogue.
But the stars of the night were easily The Burning Brides, an L.A. Rock Trio who also feature prominently in the movie. They shook every building surrounding the square with an absolutely blistering set, and won this particular music fan over.
I must say, TIFF was able to put on quite a fun show for the bargain basement cost of free ninety nine. Here’s hoping tomorrow brings more of the same with poetry and zombies on tap!
I took a boatload of photos tonight. Take a look after the jump for images of Tin Star Orphans, Burning Brides, and the cast of SUCK.
My correspondents. You’ll meet them both soon enough.
SUCK cast member, Jessica Paré.
That’s the problem with rock these days…not enough trumpet.
SUCK cast member, Barbara Mamabolo.
SUCK director and star, Rob Stefaniuk.
The Burning Brides wake up the neighbours.
Burning Brides drummer, Jeff Watson.
Burning Brides singer and guitarist, Dimitri Coats.
Burning Brides bassist, Melanie Coats
And more Dimitri for good measure.
If anyone is interested, I have many more photos of both Tin Star Orphans and Burning Brides. Drop me an email and I can point you toward more photo goodness.
Oooh – sorry we missed Burning Bridges – Dimitry Coats plays a main roll in the movie – but getting the second spot in line for the show did make up for it.
