Such a Night

21 Thoughts on the 80th Academy Awards
  • Has it ever happened that Americans got shut out of the four acting awards?
  • Oh man – I could have sworn we were done with Jerry Seinfeld’s bee fetish.
  • Easily my favorite moment: Glen & Marketa winning best song for “Falling Slowly”
  • I’ll count myself lucky if I’m as spry at 98 as Robert Boyle is.
  • Was it my imagination, or did Jon Stewart run out of material 3/4 of the way through the night?
  • Line of the night: “Someone just won their Oscar pool based on a guess”
  • Your rule Diablo – leopard spots and all.
  • I never thought music for a Disney film would leave me so underwhelmed.
  • Speaking of Disney – can someone please explain Miley Cyrus’ career path to her?
  • Whoever would have thought Marion Cotillard could have won Best Actress?…
  • …oh wait, that’s right – I did!
  • OK, who can tell me what Javier said in the Spanish portion of his speech?
  • Actually, Seth & Jonah – I look most like Halle Berry
  • Canada went 0-for-10 in case you were wondering.
  • I say this every year – the show would be way shorter if they’d ease off on the montages.
  • …and what the hell was that voting analysis video all about?
  • The only thing classier than Jon Stewart ushering Marketa back out to give her speech, was Marketa’s thoughtful speech itself.
  • Am I the only one who thinks Tilda Swinton’s next role should be playing David Bowie?
  • I went 13 of 24 in my predictions (7/8 in the top categories though).
  • Anyone else get the impression that The Coen Brothers aren’t the chattiest guests at the house party?
  • That oughta put an and to all my Oscar babble until at least September.

  1. Javier thanked his mother and family for their support and said ‘this award is for Spain’.

You and I could not be more divided on Diablo Cody.

While I agree ‘Falling Slowly’ was the best of the songs, I still maintain that ONCE is nothing more than a ‘making of’ documentary.

Line of the night: “When I was 11 we took a three-piece suit and a small 8mm to Minneapolis Int’l airport and made a little film called ‘Henry Kissinger: Man on the go'” – Joel Coen

6 Oscars in one night has to be a family record.

The Enchanted Song that Amy had to sing alone works a lot better when she gets to sing it to rats and pigeons.

Otherwise the show was a yawn.

  2. Who knew Anton Chigurh was such a family man. I did catch the “This is for Spain” part – thanks for the translation.

I’m well aware of your Diablo detestation.

You are deeply in the minority on ONCE, and the movie was made well before the album.

I DID get a good laugh at Joel’s memories of being a young fimlmmaker. Good call.

Amy’s ENCHANTED song may well be cuter in context, but it still ain’t nearly as catchy as “Lady’s Choice”…which was badly snubbed. (Hell, at least this year all the songs happen IN their films, rather than over the closing credits).

Yeah – the show is always a yawn, and there just ain’t no way to jazz it up.
