After MELANCHOLIA, I find myself with renewed interest in the films of Lars Von Trier. This may, or may not, be a good thing. After all, in my first full experience with The Toronto International Film Festival, it was Von Trier who tested my patience with the very methodical DOGVILLE…a film that almost mocked its audience by marking its own length.
This autumn, Von Trier will unleash NYMPHOMANIC on us, with it’s promise of actual sex being had between its actors.
While this glimpse sure is alluring, why do I get the feeling that all us pervy gawkers out there are about to get duped?
I have a feeling this is going to be some trashy ‘shock for the sake of it’ garbage but I hope I’m wrong. I quite liked Melancholia but this looks like it has the potential to be even crazier.
That’s possible, or it’s also possible that the sex will be shot in a way that isn’t all that titillating. Ever see Winterbottom’s NINE SONGS?
That is a damn good teaser as it’s obvious from the opening frame that von Trier is once again looking towards Tarkovsky for inspiration.
Guess who’s never seen any Tarkovsky…
Despite previous reports of the stars doing the unsimulated sex themselves, it has since been reported that Lars Von Trier opted for body doubles, which will be digitally combined with the actors.
There will also apparently be two cuts of the film – one of which being less pornographic.
