Episode 5

Howdly-Ho listenerinos! Another podcast is ready for your listening fulfillment, and I’d especially like to welcome the influx of listeners I’m about to score from this week’s guest telling so many of her friends about our antics.

This week we’ll be talking about THE BOOK OF ELI, and for that I’d like to thank Rue Morgue for providing my guest and I with free passes to catch a screening. Likewise, if you’ve listened to the other four episodes you’ll notice something a little different this time around, and for that I’d like to thank the Toronto band, Used for Glue.

But without further ado, may I present the Brooks Robinson episode

  1. Excellent job, Suzie Quzie. Enjoyed the podcast and now have this burning desire to not only see the twist in Book of Eli, but to dance around to some Footloose! Priceless moment. Can't wait to hear more of Suzie Q on the podcast – I think she's got some exceptional cinematic knowledge and background… and has the best laugh ever. 🙂 Keep it up!

  2. Oh forgot to mention, an underrated Denzel flick that I really enjoyed was Mississippi Masala. It has its flaws but still worked well.

  3. @ Mike… I do indeed have fun doing these. they're damn near the high point of my week.

Speaking of, feel up to joining me for Episode Seven? Something tells me you'd be a good choice for the SHUTTER ISLAND conversation.

@ Cheese Cheese… Wow – points for the most original commenter name. Suzie was indeed a blast to podcast with. What people might not realize though, is that sort of goofy film talk between her and I is par for the course…but usually it's on a streetcar during the evening commute.

@ CS… never actually heard of that film – pardon me while I add it to the watchlist. Glad I could kill off the shift in such an entertaining manner!

  4. @The Mad Hatter… I have enjoyed going through all your reviews. The are entertaining and informative. I had no idea about the Spiderman debacle. *shakes head in mourning for Spidey* Keep up the great work. You have gained one happy movie-obsessed fan. Now what to watch… what to watch. 🙂

P.S. Thanks for the kudos on the name. I guess I was hungry. 😉

  5. Ways to end a conversation #1: Mention Pauly Shore.

Loved Denzel in Glory, glad it's there. Should be in any list! He's also great in Philadelphia, and of course Training Day. Malcolm X is such a pinnacle performance, such a shame he doesn't get nearly enough credit for it. Still surprised Al Pacino won with such a strong year. The Hurricane was one of my favorite performance when I was just getting into movies and writing about them.

"Hate got me in here, love's gonna bust me out" – great line.

For the longest time he would have been my #1 favorite actor, not quite as much today, but still love him.

A Denzel heavy cast is a great cast for me to listen to :).

  6. Great as ever, sounding a bit professional with your theme music!

So you went for to top five Denzel Washington movies because you couldn’t think of anything else. As you were talking about The Book of Eli you could have gone for your top five post apocalyptic or dystopian movies, but then I am always on the lookout for an excuse to talk about Mad Max!

    5 – The Hurricane
    4 – Fallen – what an ending!
3 – Devil in a Blue Dress – his most underrated movie
    2 – Malcolm X – so nearly number one.
1 – Training Day – Yes he was that good.

The three I struggled to leave out, his other underrated movie Man on Fire. Mo' Better Blues a great but underrated Spike Lee movie with great interaction between Washington and Wesley Snipes. Crimson Tide – great interaction with Gene Hackman.

On the subject of The Hurricane, I waited years for a movie about Rubin Carter, I had read up on him in the mid 90’s as a big fan of Bob Dylan I was intrigued by the lyrics to The Hurricane. And Univarn, saying he was just getting into movies in 1999, sure-fire of making me feel old, thanks!

  7. @ Cheese Cheese… Anytime, now go spread the word of my antics to any of your fellow movie geek friends.

@ Univarn… That's national treasure Paulie Shore. One of the selfish little things I love about THE HURRICANE is how part of it is a Toronto story and was in fact filmed here. There are several scenes that take place in neighbourhoods I grew up in.

Just a little fun fact that got left on the editing room floor.

@ Number Six… Glad you liked the ditty, here was me thinking nobody had noticed!

Honestly, a Post-apocalyptic five was my first choice, but I couldn't really think of enough films that Susie and I would have enough different titles to talk about (Though my list likely would have worked up to THE ROAD WARRIOR).

  8. LOL

    "Speaking of crack…it's Sony again!"

I forgot about that…a comedic gem, it was! You make me laugh and laugh! lol

Incidentally, the Footloose line belongs to Paula Poundstone, really, not me. I just found a suitable spot in which to play it! 😉

Ah, good times. I was still thinking about the Apocalyptic Top 5, as well, actually. I'm not sure how my list would have worked, but you know there would have been at least one zombie movie on it. And I would have found a way to include Serenity. 😉

    – Suzie McCheat

PS You are really starting to settle nicely into the podcasting groove, Hatter. My guest spot aside, this was yet another enjoyable listen, and I can't wait for the next ones!

PPS "a rigged audience enjoys Karate Kid"! Oh, how you make me laugh!

  9. I've just listened to the last podcast…you're too quick!

I agree on a lot of points about your review of The Single Man. We saw this one in Chelsea so there were quite a few men that went to see it together 😉
What struck me as interesting was the amount of British actors in this American film…
I really loved a Single Man and after listening to your podcast I immediately want to go see it again!

Also loved the idea of the top five beautifully shot films. Although I haven't seen a lot of the ones you put on your lists…

I will make sure to listen to your newest podcast soon 🙂

  10. I see that someone's already mentioned Mississippi Masala so you can take this as confirmation that you need to add it to your list of must see's.

My Top 5 (in no particular order)

    Mississippi Masala

Much Ado About Nothing (I do love me some Shakespeare)

Mighty Quinn (… and if I remember correctly he is playing a cop)

    Fallen (SUCH a great movie)

    Cry Freedom (with Kevin Kline)

Great podcast as always ~ keep 'em comin'

  11. @ Susie… Again – great work. You complete me.

@ Vanessa… Sorry to be so podcastingly prolific…least it keeps you entertained. those movies Cheshire and I talked about are indeed quite easy on the eyes, give 'em a look sometime (and then, y'know, write about em!)

Now quit reading and listen to episode five.

@ Danger… Strangely, I haven't seen many of those, but now I'll have to add them to the list. Thanks for listening!

  12. @Hatter As you know, you had me at hello.

And just putting it out there, I'm kind of happily surprised that someone other than me…than I…likes Fallen. Not just for something to put on a Best of Denzel list, but just as a film in and of itself. I have pretty ecclectic taste, especially when it comes to flicks like that, so it always feels good to discover that – sometimes – other people share my tastes, too!

    – Suzie von CompleteLeHattington

  13. Suzie,

I think you could get away with Serenity, they do state that we had to leave earth. As for the Zombies I think two would make my list too!

Maybe you should compile a list and have another guest blogger spot.

  14. Alright, Hatter, I finally got to listen to the show – probably the best yet.

    Lots to touch on:

Suzie made for a great guest. Really had me nodding along with her 5 questions and such…until she listed a bunch of crappers in her Top 5. The Bone Collector, really? I saw it and can remember almost nothing except that I thought it awful.

Danger Girl, meanwhile, has got the one Denzel appearance that I'd alllmmost forgotten about, yet love, in Much Ado About Nothing. Fun, fun movie, and one that I haven't seen in way too long.

Eli – sounds like you both were generally in line with me, though a bit higher. I could not, can not, will not, and won't not ever swallow that twist, and I'm not willing to watch it again just to see how poorly it plays out. It's easy to pull the wool over the audience's eyes when the wool is covered with so much bullshit.

Hatter – are you sure you're not from the midwest? I think you used every old-style midwestern term short of "holy mackeral" and "gee willikers." 😉

Andy – Hurricane is one of my favorite Dylan songs. Tremendous song. I've always been pissed at the Dazed and Confused soundtrack folks for not managing to get it on either of their otherwise awesome discs.

  15. @ Miss Q… Don't be surprised, FALLEN is one kick-ass movie!

@ Number 6… Don't get her started down the SERENITY path – there will be no stopping her then. No seriously, you haven't any idea the Pandora's Box you will open by getting Bruisey von Whippit talking about SERENITY.

@ Fletch… Sue doesn't really like BONE COLLECTOR *that* much…she just has a bit of a thing for Angelina. danger meanwhile swung by my desk yesterday and told me about a whole host of movies I have to add to the rental list. What can I say – the girl's got taste.

As for ELI, I can dig you not going for it. I gave it a big 'ol thumbs up, but it's not so flawless that I think everyone needs to like it.

And as for my midwestern-ness, nope…not even a little bit. What you hear there is two things at once. For starters it's a little bit of Canadian finally coming through (though I do try to keep my "eh's" in check at the mic), and a lot more of my own goofy love for words and sayings other people don't use.

Wanna stop a conversation dead in its tracks? Use the term "tickity-boo" with a straight face.

Glad you dug…it means a lot!

  16. Hi Hatter, sorry it took me awhile to finally listen to your podcast. WOW, it's awesome, cool theme music and you definitely have a lively, pleasing voice… man, I'd think you'd are a professional radio DJ!

@ Suzie – You've GOT to see Ben Hur even if just for the chariot race alone, but can skip Spartacus IMO (I know I'm gonna get flak for that but I just did NOT like that movie).

@ Hatter – Agree about Sony making a big mistake about Spidey, but then again I'm kind of tired of that franchise so who cares. That Karate Kid just has ghastly written all over it, so yeah, definitely rigged or the audience's on crack like the studio was 🙂

I'm also guilty for not having seen The Hurt Locker, but I really want to!! As for Oscar, I won't complain if Avatar ends up winning Best Picture.

Btw, we almost went to see Book of Eli after reading your positive review of it, but after we had dinner we felt too sleepy to see a movie so we went home instead. Might just check it out on dvd.

Anyway, great job on your podcast!

  17. @ RTM… No apologies necessary…however if you wanted to spread the word about my mad little audio experiment, I wouldn't disaprove.

I don't completely disagree with Sony wanting to shake up the Spidey franchise (1 was OK, 2 was amazing, 3 was terrible)…but what leaves me scratching my head is the desire to start all over again. You can start telling better Spidey stories without needing to take him all the way back to high school. *sigh*

As for HURT LOCKER get on it – you won't be sorry. I can foresee AVATAR winning Best Pic, though it's a tad less likely at the moment, but while I wouldn't claim "bullshit", it wouldn't be my first choice. (I'd rather the basterds if locker couldn't take it).

    Thanks for listening!

  18. Thoroughly enjoyed the podcast, I'm a fan of Susie Q and love to hear her take on movies, and appreciate anyone who can make her laugh. So my hat's off to you, pun very much intended. One of my personal favorites of Denzel's is "Devil in a Blue Dress" and glad it got mentioned. I also loved the cat meow, priceless ;)Keep up the great work!!

  19. @ Anon… Thanks for listening! Suzie did indeed make for yet another fun time behind the mic. The trick is going to be deciding when to go back to the top of the horn and start bringing guests back for a second appearance!

Oh, and Kitt – the source of the "meow" – is an absolute diva, and just HAD to have her fifteen minutes!
