A bit of a programming note before I get to episode forty-six: The Matineecast will be switching hosts very shortly. My host for two years now, mypodcast.com, will be closing soon (gotta love a down economy!). I think I’ve got things worked out to the point that subscriptions won’t be interrupted, but my tech skills being what they are – it’s entirely possible that I might miss a step.

So if you get past December 5th and can’t get the new episode, check in here and make sure you’re set to the right feed. In the meantime, here’s another round of the guest getting me liquored up.

Here’s what’s in store in the Andy Pettite episode…

64 minutes, 47 seconds

  1. Thanks so much for having me on, Ryan. I was embarrassed to hear Leora a few weeks ago basically expose my whining about not being on the show. I had a great time and hope I proved to be a decent guest.

    1. No embarrassment at all good buddy – heck some of our crew have outright demanded to be on specific episodes. I’m just honoured to be in demand.

Thanks again for the great bit of guesting.
      And for the booze.

      1. Hahah well it worked so nothing to be embarrassed for. =)

Nice episode about a film I’ll wait a while to see. Clint is really on a bad streak right now.

When it comes to changes on the Matinee Cast I think the current format is very good. It was the first podcast I ever listened to and as such it works great. So I wouldn’t tweak that much.

It would be interesting if you could include a smaller short review or such of a lesser known film on DVD for instance like a bargain bin/hidden gem piece.

As I have said earlier it would be nice to have Shannon back as a guest and also add Jessica to the rooster if you guys can coordinate a time for it.

        1. Getting people on/back on continues to be the trickiest thing about this show. Honestly, it’s probably the most tempting element of making this show a more frequent occurrence…but I just can’t.

I like the short DVD discussion idea. I’ll have to stew over how to work that in. Thanks for the feedback!

  2. Fine show gents. Excellent natural rapport and good chat. I expected nothing less. Though once you jumped into the whiskey, I was expecting perhaps a few fisticuffs…

James, nice picks on “The Boss Of It All” (very funny and has the lovely Louise Mieritz) and “Police, Adjective” (one of the slowest movies EVER, but has that last 20 minute scene with the captain that is fantastic). Ryan, Police should be available on DVD at the old Filmfest (I keep forgetting it’s new name since it moved closer to you) since I’ve seen it available at Videoflicks. Be warned though – it is remarkably slow as it shows the monotonous aspects of police work.

And nice call on “So I Married An Axe Murderer”. Not sure if Alan Arkin’s character should make it on a list of terrible bosses, but it doesn’t matter because I’m glad you reminded me of those great scenes with him. I love Arkin’s comedic abilities and they are rarely better than here. I also totally agree with the statement that Myers should just play at “regular” – but it may be too late.

I’ll have to think more about Matineecast format changes. My initial thought is “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, but I know you’re looking for ideas and constructive feedback. Like Joel above, I would like to hear a bit more diversity with some shorter reviews or comments on other movies – particularly about some classic, foreign or more obscure titles. It can be an interesting challenge to try to convince people how great a hidden gem is especially if you only have 30-60 seconds.

  3. I also agree with Joel about recommending lesser known films on DVD.

How about having a mini (no more than 5 minutes) discussion topic segment? Essentially you take one item from the past two weeks worth of movie related news and discuss. It does not have to be the same thing that everyone else is talking about (i.e. new footage of …, this actor was just cast in…, etc.) but something that you personally find interesting enough to discuss.

    1. That’s sort of what I’m trying to do with the top five sequence, but perhaps I need something a bit more specific. The news note is a good one, I’ll be discussing that on the next episode.
