For the second week in a row, The Matineecast arrives with a curious formula:

Great guest, less than sexy feature review.

Episode 81’s main review wasn’t as attractive as some because the film itself was lacklustre. Episode 82 on the other hand features a fantastic film for the main review, but one that is low-profile and probably not widely seen. Once again though, the discussion is fun. So even if you haven’t seen the main attraction, I think my guest and I will still be able to entertain you.

This episode allowed for a little bit of closure for me since it gave me one last moment to articulate a few thoughts on Roger Ebert. I was quietly appreciative that Dor added in a few thoughts and memories of her own, since it brought a welcome switch from mourning into the aether.

Here’s what’s in store in episode eighty-one…

  1. Here’s My Feedback Answer:
If you asked me a decade ago if I would be a fan of documentaries, I probably would have laughed. However, I now see them quite regularly (thanks partially to the doc-centered programming of the Bloor Cinema). I have to say that my favourite documentary filmmaker is Errol Morris and his “Interrotron” method of doing interviews. Undoubtedly Morris’ best work is the Oscar winning documentary THE FOG OF WAR, which acted as a confessional for former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara.

  2. I have seen like 4 documentaries in my life. I really enjoyed Exit Through the Gift Shop.

I liked Ginger and Rosa, even though I felt like it was missing something. Elle Fanning is ahmazing. Great look and nice concept. The dad was a dick.
Also, what is the name of the bit of music that came before Ginger and Rosa’s discussion? My jazz knowledge sucks.

I remember being freaked out by American Beauty when I was 13-14 and then rewatching it at 17 and being totally blown away.

  3. I don’t normally listen in time to give feedback, here goes:

I have started watching documentaries in the cinema over the last few years. In the past I had only seen them on TV. My favourite of recent years is Senna. I am a fan of motor racing and consider Senna to be the best driver I have ever seen. The testament to how good the movie is the amount of people who have no interest in the sport who enjoyed it.

A suggestion for another “other side” to go with Ginger & Rosa: another coming of age story with a twist about two girls. My Summer of Love from 2004 and starring a pre fame Emily Blunt.

    1. You very much got this down in time since we still haven’t rolled tape on Episode 83 yet! Thanks man – looking forward to discussing this on the show.

My next trick will hopefully be FINALLY getting you back on for a return appearance this summer.
