Back in the spring, I started following a website and thought to myself “This writer would make a pretty good guest on The Matineecast”. Then in the summer, she came out to join a group of us for a few drinks and some Verhoeven and my hunch was confirmed. So when time came to finally get her on the show, and the Gods of scheduling seemed to be conspiring against me, I dared to defy them…because there was no way I wasn’t getting her on.
Amusingly, the topic du jour is actually a “jour” or two past its best-before date, but the conversation was still a lot of fun and is well worth the listen.
So while TIFF is in the air and all eyes turning towards the autumn, join me for one of the last kicks at summer with a wonderfully energetic guest.
Here’s what’s in store in episode sixty-six…

I have to admit that I haven’t seen a single Bourne movie. This means that I’m not likely to watch the latest installation either.
Regarding your question, the movie I look forward to most is The Hobbit, even though I’m doing it with a little bit of dread since the reactions to the new double-amount-of-frames technology were so cold when they showed it to the press. It just doesn’t sound appealing. Besides I wish they didn’t go for the 3D. It worked so well without it in the LOTR movies, there’s really no need to go down that road, taking hte risk that it will look crap.
But for all those reservations I still look forward to it very much. I’m such a Tolkien geek at heart and I’ve loved Jacksons adaptations so far.
Well, well, well…I can’t remember the last time you were the first to listen/comment Jessica. Thanks for the enthusiasm! I can’t recommend the latest Bourne all *that* highly, but I do recommend checking out the other three. They’re a great watch when you’re looking for something that’s fun but not entirely brainless.
I definitely agree that the Sight and Sound list is very scholarly. Here are the films from the list that I’ve seen and the asterisked ones are films I first saw in one of my film classes.
Citizen Kane*
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans*
2001: A Space Odyssey
Man with a Movie Camera*
Battleship Potemkin*
Breathless*
Apocalypse Now
Rashomon*
Taxi Driver*
Bicycle Thieves*
Metropolis
Psycho
The 400 Blows*
The Battle of Algiers*
City Lights*
Quite the tally.
For the feedback question, any fall films you’re especially looking forward to?
The films from the fall I’m looking forward to the most are Looper, Dredd, The Master, Taken 2, Frankenweenie, Seven Psychopaths, Wreck-It Ralph, and Skyfall. Four of those films will be playing at the Toronto Film Festival, though I’ll probably just wait for the regular release date for all but one (Dredd).
Really nice show. I’m slowly becoming addicted to this.
I liked your conversation about different actors portraying the same characters. The reason I belive Katie Holmes did not want to do “The Dark Knight” is that she wanted instead to do “Mad Money” with Diane Keaton and Queen Latifah. I agree with Kristin that Maggie Gylenhaal was much better in that role then Miss Holmes.
Welcome to The Matinee Vern – and The Matineecast! There’s around forty back episodes out there to feed your addiction, and with TIFF just two weeks off there will be a lot coming at you hard & fast.
Thanks for the clarity on Holmes! I can’t believe I forgot about that dumb decision of hers, not that I’m complaining since (as stated) I prefer what Gylenhaal brought.
Wanna leave some feedback for episode 67? Fall films you’re most looking forward to?
Fall movies I want to see in theatres.
Looper
The Master
Frankenweenie
7 psychopaths
VHS
Cloud Atlas
Wreck It Ralph
Man With The Iron Fists
Les Miserables
Django Unchained
Would have loved to see The Hobbit if they didn’t turn it into another damn trilogy. Will wait for the BlueRay Box set instead
Make sure to tune in for Episode 67 on Monday; this list just might make it to air!
Haven’t seen The Bourne Legacy, and probably won’t because I’m one of the few who didn’t love the original Bourne Trilogy.
As for fall movies, I’ll just say it rhymes with “Schmooper.” That is if we’re not counting Django’s Christmas release.
Cheers!
Thanks for the late response Rach! Surprised to hear that you didn’t like the original trilogy though…you might be the only one!
Sorry that I didn’t get your “rhymes with Schmooper” comment in time to include it in Episode 67. There is some good discussion of that very film though, so go listen!
…no really
…don’t wait
…I don’t see you putting on your headphones
…why do you hate me…?
Late to the party again, one day I listen to one of these in time to comment before you record the next episode! I think you have just about summed up The Bourne Legacy. It isn’t a bad film, but it’s just doesn’t compare to the original trilogy.
I would have said my most anticipated movie for the rest of the year would have been Django Unchained but I don’t think we are getting it until next year. So I will go for:
Sky fall (always look forward to a Bond movie)
Killing Them Softly (the trailer looks great)
On the Road (based on one of my favourite books)
By the way, Alec Baldwin is still my favourite Jack Ryan
Better late than never, thanks for dropping by and listening in. Unfortunately you *did* miss the cut-off line for my next episode, but I appreciate the feedback still. I *will* say that two of your three most anticipated got mentioned in the new episode that just went up, so go give it a listen!
