Episode 11

“Guess who’s back…back again… “

Stepping up the usual two-wek podcasting window to double time for a little while, mostly in the interest of getting to a few more fun titles before Hot Docs begins and throws my whole schedule for a wicked loop.

Indeed, if I had to hand the ball to an ace on short rest, there are few more fitting candidates than today’s guest. He made for a lot of laughs, coaxed Lady Hatter to grab hold of the mic, and made for a great episode despite my domination of the conversation this time. Getcha popcorn ready – Here’s the Jimmy Rollins episode

  1. As Dylan said, I Love You Philip Morris is on general release here. It has had good reviews but I haven’t seen it as the trailer look like real cheese. Yes we are getting a few movies before you (even the Canadian ones!!!), Kick-Ass being the best of the bunch. As for your comment about Kick-Ass not being a British film despite being set in America, it actually British (well half anyway!). It is based on a comic book by Mark Millar who is Scottish and written by Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman (both English). Vaughn touted the movie around Hollywood and it was turned down by every studio in town. It was then independently funded by Plan B Entertainment (American) and Matthew Vaughn’s own studio MARV Films (British). So half the funding was American half British and rumour has it a lot came out of Vaughn’s own pocket. If you want to claim a peace of it for Canada, a lot of it was shot in Toronto.

I really enjoyed The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The story is trimmed down a lot but is as faithful to the book as it could have been in the length of a movie. The book is better though.

I am honoured to be discussed on the legendry Matineecast.

As you now know my eight movies were:
    Casablanca
    Some Like it Hot
    Goodfellas
    Serenity
    Two Lane Blacktop
    Dazed and Confused
    Pulp Fiction
    Oldboy

I’m not sure I can trim it down to eight so this is what I will do, drop: Two Lane Blacktop, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, Oldboy and replace them with Fight Club making my list:

    Casablanca
    Some Like it Hot
    Dazed and Confused
    Serenity
    Fight Club

Hatter, I can second the recommendation for Primer

Finally at the end of the cast you stumbled onto something that vary nearly became part of the blog. On the (crazy British) radio show once they have gone through their eight records they are then asked if the could only take one what would it be.

If my responses to your podcast get any longer I will post them as a blog in their own right.

  2. Thanks for the mention :)!

As for this week's question: Iron Man 2 and Inception peak my interest, but to be honest this year looks worse than last year for film lineups.

Everywhere I go on the web I hear about sixty million mentions of Arcade Fire. Perhaps I should actually listen to one of their songs? Hmmmmmmm.

Good selections all around on Desert Island. As I started looking around I began thinking. You know, if we weren't all so reserved and mature about it these lists would be very different. Lots of lonely people on the island. Lots of male bloggers. I'm thinking secret a porno or two is making the trip as well 😛

  3. whoa thanks for the shout out… and for the podcast, no less.

and did the Hatter compare Heroes to Casablanca?

  4. Thanks for pointing this out to me! I enjoyed it. Regarding Dylan's list, I friggin' love Primer. I don't understand a single second of it, but, it doesn't matter, cuz it's just such and interesting thing to experience.

I don't know what I would have if I had to narrow it down to five. Hmmm… I guess, I would go with:
    28 Days Later…
    Se7en
    (500) Days of Summer
    The Godfather
    Pulp Fiction

Little bit of everything: Some horror, some rom-com, some crime, and some pulp.

Also, Hatter, your opinion on The Godfather is shared by yours truly. It's nice to know that I'm not as crazy by declaring this the best movie ever made.

  5. @ Number Six… A mere 24 hours after my podcast posts and we have an answer – looks like PHILLIP MORRIS will drop here in July.

OK, OK, KICK-ASS is "British". That one doesn't puzzle me so much as CHLOE did. That one is through-and-through Canadian, so why you Brits got it first is beyond me.

I think if you went back through the monster roll call and asked everyone to whittle these lists from eight down to one, you'd detonate the heads of a few dozen bloggers in a big 'ol hurry!

    @ Univarn…

    Track down the following songs:

    "Keep the Car Running"
    "Wake Up"
    "Rebellion (Lies)"
    "Black Mirror"
    and
    "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)"

    …You can thank me later.

@ Mike… How could I possibly ignore such well-thought-out analysis, and one that ends on such a funny note, no less? As for "Heroes", I just meant to point out the fact that the final episode aired on February 8th and I am still yet to watch it despite it being on my DVR for a full 2 months.

@ Sebastian… Glad you dug my handiwork (perhaps you might see fit to listen to a back episode or two?). There is so much going on in THE GODFATHER – I say it takes about another 10-15 years to start being the universal answer to the "greatest of all" question.

PS – Got any feedback on my summer movie question?

  6. If it makes you feel any better Chloe crept into theatres and snuck out the back door after a week before anyone noticed it. It didn’t even show at my regular cinema that normally shows most movies. On that subject I saw Shelter last night, my third Julianne Moore movie of the year, it was utter rubbish, what was she thinking.

  7. Hatter – First off, thanks again for having me on. Twas a pleasure to finally get to speak to Lady Hatter, the true star of the show. 😉

I'm sure I could list 10 other Arcade Fire songs for you to recommend to Univarn, the glaring omission is clearly Intervention. It's only the best song off of Neon Bible. I'd replace it for Keep the Car Running, easy. The other choices are solid. There's nothing remotely close to a bad song on Funeral – start there, Uni.

RE: the summer movie question that I wasn't allowed to answer: duh, The Expendables!

  8. I loved this podcast. Usually, I think an hour is too long for podcasts but this one flew by. Listened to it at work. Now I'm going to go back and listen to the past episodes. Great features, interesting discussion, and just an overall enjoyable hour. Thanks!

  9. Hatter… you need to stop what you're doing and see Primer… and it is pronounced Prime-Err not Primm-er… just FYI for Fletch… he was right the first time. 🙂
It was super low budget, like under 50K, and shot in the guy's parent's house. Instant classic… you'll feel lost for the first half hour but I think the confusing dialogue is just put there to convince you that these guys are smart enough to invent time travel… not because it wants you to understand what they're saying. So, stop watching the Blue Jays and Almost Famous and pop it in. 🙂
Keeps just missing my FILMS YOU DIDN'T KNOW YOU NEEDED TO SEE LIST but maybe I'll throw it in the next one.
Great podcast as usual… getting better each week… keep it up!!!

  10. @ Fletch… It was actually difficult for me to keep that list down to five. Truthfully I wanted to tell the lad to grab both albums and play them until they wear out. In the end, I thought a five track primer might do to get him going (The question is – will he listen to them?)

Thanks again for doing this, it was worth the two episode delay, and I think this list went off better than our top five "Color Movies" would have.

@ Elgringo… Well thank you kind sire, likewise thanks for the plug on your blog (I noticed this evening). Enjoy the back episodes and listen up for a new volume on Monday.

incidentally, got an answer to my little listener feedback question?

@ kai… I'll put it on the neverending list of Movies-to-See and move it towards the top of the que. As for tearing my eyes away from The Blue Jays, how could I do that now?? They're winning! Lord know how little of that I'm going to see this season!!

  11. Great job, guys! I loved hearing your Desert Island discussion!

And yeah, Primer's awesome. I hope you like it!
