It’s strange the way things happen.
There was more than one moment when I thought episode ten might not happen. There were problems with my podcast server site, some musical chairs where my guest was concerned, and then a slight bit of technical difficulties that resulted in some spotty sound at times.
Honestly – I thought about just trashing this episode and putting double effort into the next episode.
However, the conversation with this episode’s guest was just far too much fun to unceremoniously ditch. So if you’ll excuse a little bit of echo, and a moment or two of quiet audio, I give you the Andre Dawson episode

I love me some Lawrence of Arabia, should definitely be seen on a big screen, but I still enjoy it as an afternoon viewing on my home TV.
For Young Stars making it, it's almost impossible to pick out the ones that will make it. For each quiet sneak through Elijah Wood, there's a wild, holy cow what is that child doing, Drew Barrymore. As well, you lose a lot to other careers once they graduate college.
If there's one that gets through, that I would like, I would say Abigail Breslin. She seems to have a good head on her shoulder (rule that excludes Lidnsey Lohan types), has done nothing so big she could never shake herself of it (rule that excludes the likes of Harry Potter team), and some good film choices (rule that excludes your Emma Roberts despite family name/talent).
Runaways, still on a maybe DVD rental.
Some solid biopic pics. I still need to see Ed Wood, it' just not high on my list. Honestly, I'm still not that big on Milk as a movie. It's good, but I felt Penn went into caricature as you felt like he didn't. Brolin was amazing though. Still, it wouldn't make my all time list.
Lenny sounds like a movie I would go for though. I love him as a comedian, and I love Hoffman, so I could see myself going for that.
Though I do love me some War biopics. Films like Patton, Schindler's List, and To Hell and Back. Also I love films like Lawrence of Arabia, Ghandi, and Spartacus so those would be high contenders. Would also be willing to sneak in there a film like Chaplin for fandom's sake :).
Another great cast Mad!
I listened to it a couple of days ago. Thanks for the shout outs. Shouts out? Shouts outs, no they can't both be plural. Thank for the props!
And finally some love for Ed Wood!
Definitely queued up Lenny (among other flicks) after this taping.
It's my personal mission to see that Ed Wood is not lost amidst crud like Planet of the Apes and Willy Wonka. It should be placed on a pedestal along with Pee-wee's Big Adventure. I'm totally serious.
Thanks again to Hatter for having me on. It was super fun.
Great episode! I really enjoyed hearing Megan's input, especially when you guys discussed The Runaways (when you asked "What is this movie's intended audience?" I said "Me!" the same time she did haha).
And I guess I still haven't seen Lawrence of Arabia either. Oops. Nice shout out for Ed Wood though, that movie is under-appreciated!
@ Univarn… Sure, rub in the fact that you're off today why doncha? Thanks for the young stars comment – I'll be recording the next episode this Saturday, so right now that's coming in handy.
@ Big Mike… Wow, a couple of days ago? I only posted it on Saturday afternoon, so you might be my biggest fan right now!
I vote "Shouts Outs". Or as we say up here, "Shoats Oats".
@ Megan… Thanks again for this fine episode, you were truly splendid on short notice!
However, make sure you watch LENNY soon – I'll be quizzing you on it shortly.
@ Alex… Isn't it awesome when little answering moments like that happen. I love it! Speaking of answers, think you wanna do a guest spot on this crazy sideshow in a future episode?
Wow, I'd love to do a guest spot some time! Let me know whenever your schedule opens up! My email is alex.kittle@gmail.com if that's easier to communicate.
Still no sign of a UK release for The Runaways yet. Interesting to hear what you say about Lita Ford, while I was too young to remember the Runaways first time around I did come across them in the late 80’s early 90’s via Joan Jett and Lita Ford. It’s a shame that the movie appears to have marginalised Ford. Joan Jett fans should look out the movie Light of Day, it isn’t much good but Jett isn’t bad in it and it has a great title song by Bruce Springsteen.
Bio-pics are a tough call as there are so many of them, but here are a few ideas:
1 – Goodfellas
2 – Ed Wood
3 – Raging Bull
4 – The Insider
5 – Schindler's List
Or great recent bio-pics:
1 – Che (parts 1 &2)
2 – Factory Girl
3 – The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
4 – The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
5 – Julie & Julia (just seen today and was really impressed)
And finally bio-pics form leftfield:
I'm Not There
Marie Antoinette
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
As for you actors who will be around in a few years Kristen Stewart is a good actress and will outlast her wooden co star. It’s a fashionable to knock her because of the Twilight movies but she really can act. Take a look at these movies:
Panic Room
Undertow
Into The Wild
Adventureland
Finally as great and as epic as Lawrence of Arabia is I can’t even say its David Lean’s best movie, for me it certainly comes behind Brief Encounter and Doctor Zhivago and maybe The Bridge on the River Kwai too.
I've listened to a few episodes. I like it a lot. Thanks for putting the time and effort into producing your podcast.
I'm not Kathy Bates status yet, but getting close.
And how could nobody mention Malcolm X?
@ Alex… Yay! I'll keep it in mind for a summer episode. I'll drop you an email a few weeks ahead to set something up.
@ Number Six… I love your post-cast comments, but I almost never know where to begin.
I do know that not everyone in this story was too terribly thrilled with the portrayal, so it could be that Ford was one of the characters sidelined due to rights issues.
Your bio-pic lists leave me somewhat stupified, there's more than one that I can't believe I forgot! especially CHE, which I was watching in the days leading up to the podcast!!
@ Edgar… Thank you for listening, there have been a few days where I swear I'm talking to an audience of seven.
Now go tell your friends.
@ Big Mike… I think we're saving X for a future episode where i combine episode five and episode ten to list off our top five Denzel Washington bio-pics.
Malcolm X
American Gangster
Cry Freedom
The Hurricane
and… Remember the Titans?
I'm going to ditto Andy from fandango groovers on Kristen Stewart – she's a great actor and I'd add Speak to that list. We'll see lots of her in the future and I bet she'll maintain her indie roots. Glad to hear you both enjoyed her performance here, but a minor gripe on the contradiction of commenting on her performance in both the Twilight films while admitting to only seeing one.
But – kudos for Last Temptation of Christ as a biopic pick. That's freaking gusty! Woot! Interesting biopic choicces overall … lots more films to add to the to-see list. One of my faves if Walk the Line – amazing how many biopics are about musicians.
On a completely different tone, Bronson is freaking amazing. Tom Hardy plays the title role of a guy in the UK whose been in maximum security and/or solitary for most of his life. He's performance is astounding.
I'm not sure I'm convinced Kristen Stewart is a great actress… but based on your review, she's not biting her nails anymopre so that's a great start. As far as kids who will be around, I gotta go Abigail Breslin. She picks damn good movies (or her people do) and she does great in them. She's wearing well thru her awkward years and I actually look forward to seeing the roles she picks as she gets closer to her late teens and early 20's.
Great Cast!!!
haha THAT was a fun episode! Nice job, guy and lady! So glad you didn't ditch it due to trouble-makings! 😉
Empire Strikes Back, 13 Going On 30 (which I just watched again yesterday on my PVR), and the Muppet Movie?! So awesome.
Aside from "we're gonna get 'em", I think my favourite line of the whole ep was, "That's not sloppy; that's just rock 'n' roll!" LOL
Well played. I think I love this girl! lol
I'm late to the game, as always, so I won't really comment much on my young actors thoughts…that and I don't really have any. Heh.
I think Dakota Fanning is far from done, though, and that we will see a lot from her as she grows into adulthood…I think she has the chops to stretch herself beyond being merely cute or pretty, and that we'll continue to see some truly genuine and remarkable performances from her down the road.
I ws willing to dismiss Kristen Stewart (K-Stew…another good one!) based on Twilight alone, which pained me, because I thought she did some fairly brilliant work as a kid, but after hearing you both talk about her performance in Runaways, I'm willing to put my opinion of her talent on hold for now, and wait to see how she does in her post-Twilight fallout.
All in all, a fantastic episode, well worth the listen, and a really fun Top 5…my brain is still swirling around what my own list might look like, but it hurts to think that much on a Sunday, so I will stop now. 😉
Excellent job, as always, Hatter!

@ Big Mike… Wasn't the TRAINING DAY guy a real dude?
@ Shannon… Sorry about that. I have stopped wailing on the TWILIGHT folk because I'm sure by now, everyone knows it's not my cup of tea. However, I take no responsibility for the opinions of my guests.
@ Kai… I'm not the biggest fan of Stewart, but as I mentioned in the podcast – this performance is encouraging.
As for Breslin – make sure you listen to episode eleven. She comes up.
@ Susie… When you saw EMPIRE for the first time, were you wearing suspenders? Something tells me you woulda had the same stance…
He based the look on a real cop that was indicted in the Rampart scandal back in the early part of the decade. But, you know, names and places changed to protect the guilty and all…
haha I was older when it came out…but I FELT suspender-y! 😉
