I have the hunch a few people will have a comment or two to make about this one, so I’ll keep things brief.
What I will say, is that this films is shaping up to be exactly what I expected it to be…

I’m not excited about it, but of course I’ll see it. At the moment, I think that Anne might be among contenders at different awards. They looove perfomances like hers. I know it’s wrong to think that far but well.
The award bodies sure do latch to their favorites, don’t they? Maybe now that Meryl Streep has another Oscar, the Academy will look past her to other worthy nominees for a few years.
I know Hathaway has the acting chops to pull this off, here’s hoping she has the voice!
Here’s hoping she has the voice? Have you heard her in this trailer?! I’ve heard that song done my MANY singers, and this sounds butchered.
When watched on mute, this trailer looks incredible.
By the time it hits screens they might loop her, auto-tune her, or involve other after-effect trickery to fill in some of the gaps.
She won’t be as good as any of those broadway legends – nobody in this film other than Jackman will even come close – but things might improve from what we see and hear in this clip by the time the curtain goes up.
I have never read the book or seen any of its adaptations so I am curious. But still for a total stranger like me, this isn’t the most impressive of teasers.
I do love most of the cast, except Crowe who is my anti-Depp. I hate Tom Hooper for stealing that Oscar from Fincher, but he can deliver this sort of a film. Also can’t wait to see Mr. Jackman sing 🙂
Actually thanks for the note – I should re-read this book this year. I’ll put it in the same pile as Gatsby.
Best film of 2012, calling it right now. Let it spark a new era of movie musicals.
Interesting call for top dog. I’m hopeful that a film like THE MASTER, LINCOLN, or LOOPER might factor into that conversation.
However, I think before Hollywood can truly spark a new era of movie musicals, they need to get better at casting and adapting. I wish rather than stacking the deck with A-listers, they’d go out and mine broadway for actors that could make the leap and bank on them instead.
This is totally a contender for the Oscars and rightfully so. I think it might be really good although, it’s likely that there’s going to be better films coming out this year. Still, I wouldn’t mind rooting for this. Especially for Anne… my sweet Anne.
Before you start filling out your Oscar pool sheet, I defy you to load up the trailer for NINE and tell me how amazing *that* trailer looked.
I thought the trailer was Nine was Ok but w/ the exception of Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, and the brilliant Marion Cotillard. That film sucked! Rob Marshall is a fucking hack.
I don’t neccessarily consider Marshall a hack – thought he killed it with CHICAGO – but you proved my point. NINE was a really bad film that came from a *very* promising trailer.
So keep that in mind when you look at this promising triler.
I mean, I have doubts, but that has more to do with the state of movie musicals than it does this particular project. I mean, they seem to be doing everything right here. They got a director who understands quiet, intimate character moments, as well as the more sweeping stuff, both of which Les Mis has by the boatload. They have a real musical talent playing their lead (Seriously. Have you seen some Jackman’s videos from his Broadway show? He’s amazing!). And even though Anne doesn’t have the best voice, she is acting the hell out of it, which is always nice!!
Yeah, I’m pumped, if only because Les Mis is directly responsible for the path my life has taken.
It’s responsible for the path your life has taken? You spend most days singing in front of French blockades?
Your doubts and my doubts are the same, and through it all, I remain hopeful.
Oh, and I have indeed seen Jackman sing – he brought his one-man-show to Toronto last spring so I’ve heard him do numbers from ‘The Man From Oz’, ‘Oklahoma’, ‘The Music Man’ and other shows. He’s the *one* thing about this film I’m not worried about.
Singing in front of French Blockades is my weekend job.
No, I mean, seeing Les Mis in London is what made me want to go into theater. It was such a powerful experience.
And that you got to see Jackman’s show, actually see it, makes me hate you even more! Nyah!
That’s the biggest upshot of being married to Lindsay – I go to see a lot of broadway.
Very cool to know which show sparked you down your life’s path, and given your age, I’m surprised it was a slightly older show (read: and 80’s production). I would have guessed it’d be something more modern like Rent or Wicked, or such.
I do love me some RENT, but WICKED is a piece of shit!!! Don’t ever come up with the idea that that show had any sort of influence on me.
…a piece of shit?
I cannot wait to see this and that trailer is just a perfect little teaser for the start of the build up to this film.
As always, I remain hopeful…but I don’t know if “they” will be able to pull it off.
We shall see!
I saw Les Misérables at the Princess of Wales theatre sometime in the late-1990s (it was my first stage musical, which isn’t saying much, since I only see those once in a blue moon). I liked it, though I barely remember the plot.
The film is a definite maybe.
Well, you have six months or so – grab yourself a copy of the book and brush up.
I’m pumped about the film! I’ve seen the musical theater production in London and in Chicago twice (I favored Chicago’s performance). I’ve never read the book – I’d love to at some point, but it seems a little intimidating to me right now.
I wish there were a group of people who could sing as well as they could act. The acting will be phenomenal, I have no doubt. The set looks gorgeous and I think the visuals will be stunning. It’s just frustrating to see very average voices being hailed when they’re already highly edited (yes, I’m referring to Anne Hathaway’s). Aside from that complaint though, I’m excited.
Are you excited to see this film, or is not your cup of tea?
It is my cup of tea, but there are more than a few red flags. Had Universal gone a different route and stacked the cast with talent that was more balanced between acting and singing, I might be more jacked. As it stands, I’m worried.
I’ve only ever seen the stage show once (about five years ago here in Toronto), but have known many of the songs from the production ever since I was a young teenager thanks to all my music theatre friends exposing me to tune after tune.
Here’s hoping it turns out to be a good film!
