I know, I know…posting a trailer coming out of a long weekend totally seems like “mailing it in”. Between Blind Spots and Hot Docs this week though, the usual schedule is all over the map. So allow me a moment to take a breath before things start getting really nutty around here.
So here we have a property that could come across any number of ways. For starters, it’s an adaptation of a stage musical – so there’s a big stripe of Broadway painted down the centre of it. However, it’s a jukebox musical…one where the music numbers are clearly meant as staged performances. So the way it plays – and the way it will likely come across on film – is far less DREAMGIRLS, and far more WALK THE LINE. Any bets on whether that will help or hinder the final product?
With this brief glimpse at the upcoming adaptation of a show I quite like, I can see two things that will likely work in its favour. One is that Clint Eastwood’s nostalgic view of America totally suits the subject matter. The other is that this film will benefit massively from its casting of no-names in the roles of The Four Seasons.
If you’ll pardon me now, I’m off to listen to some Frankie Valli.
As a fan of classic retro music like Frankie Valli, I’ve always wanted to see Jersey Boys on stage. I’m happy to see this come to the big screen, though I have to question Eastwood’s tone. His filter is always so dark I can barely see what’s taking place! I look forward to this nonetheless. 🙂
That’s actually one of the things I like about seeing music on film is the way they can play with mood through lighting. On stage everything HAS to be so damned bright otherwise the audience can’t see anything. On film meanwhile, there are more ways to photograph the action and the director can use shadow to greater effect.
I definitely see what you mean, but I’m betting Clint will have the important parts shot nice and bright.
I’m actually not a fan of many musicals that randomly break out into song (like Dreamgirls). So if this one is more staged, then I think I’ll like it better. I’m a huge Frankie Valli fan, and I too think Eastwood’s nostalgia will only help this film.
Geez Withrow – haven’t you ever randomly broken into song in your day-to-day life?
