My attention has turned to yet another film festival…but this one won’t be offering me any new titles. Quite the opposite actually.

There are two curiosities that occur within this episode. For starters, it’s probably The Matineecast where yours truly speaks the least of all the ones recorded to date. For seconds, I have to smile at the irony of how two silent film lovers are so very chatty.

My guests this week are Shirley Hughes and Chris Edwards from the upcoming Toronto Silent Film Festival. Their fourth annual effort of spreading the love of silent cinema across this fair city begins in just ten days, so as a novice to the genre I thought I’d sit down with them to get the scoop on their love of the format and what to expect.

To recap the concept of this offshoot – expect to see these episodes turning up once a month. My intention is for them to be a bit more raw (there are almost no cuts in this conversation), a bit shorter, with no rules, and less of a pecking order on who sits down at the table.

This episode does run a little bit long, clocking in closer to the runtime of a regular Matineecast than an IBD episode. However, in seeing how passionate both Shirley and Chris were to talk silent cinema, I couldn’t bring myself to cut them short at any turn.

If you’re close to Toronto, consider coming out to one of these truly unique events as part of the Toronto Silent Film Festival.

Enjoy!

  1. I really enjoyed this episode. The discussion of silent films with no sound at all reminds me of watching F.W. Murnau’s Faust in a German film class back in college. The print we saw had no sound at all, and I’ll admit it took a lot to stay awake in the dark auditorium.

I also haven’t seen enough silent films and need to see a lot more. I did just see Sunrise for the first time, and it’s an amazing film. I’ll going to watch a silent fantasy film called The Adventures of Prince Achmed later this week, so that will be interesting.

Fun show. I’ve enjoyed all of these Inbetween Days podcasts so far.

    1. Thanks Dan – I was starting to wonder if this show had found any traction! My lack of silent film knowledge I believe is palpable in this episode. However, in talking to Chris and Shirley – and soaking up their passion – I’m certainly looking forward to diving in.

If you ever find yourself in Toronto, consider yourself invited to sit and do an In Between Days episode…but we’ll get you on a full episode of The Matineecast before that.

    2. Ryan, thanks for the invite. Not sure if I’ll make it to Toronto anytime soon, but I’d love to make it there at some point and make the excellent group of Toronto bloggers. Either way, I can’t wait to chat on the Matineecast sometime soon.

Silent films are definitely a blind spot for me. I’ve yet to go beyond Keaton, Chaplin, and some of the other big ones. I could probably spend a whole year just doing marathons on silent film. Chris and Shirley’s passion definitely made it a cool show.
