I must say, 2013 is shaping up to be an exciting year at the movies.
Besides all of the amazing-looking blockbusters that are coming our way (and there are a lot of amazing-looking blockbusters coming our way), a lot of talented voices from the indie scene will be piping up again over the next twelve months.
New films are on tap from George Clooney, The Coen Brothers, Steve McQueen, Nicolas Winding-Refn, Neil Blomkamp, Kelly Reichardt, Jean-Marc Valée, and Pedro Almodovar.
The latter might intrigue me most of all – not only because he might well be my favorite international director, but because he always does something different. For instance, quick show of hands for everyone who thought he’d follow up the twisted tale of THE SKIN I LIVE IN with…well…with this:
I love that trailer, it looks so hilarious. Almodovar always deliver.
I can’t wait. Two of the three stewards were in a hilarious Spanish film at TIFF called GHOST GRADUATION. If that was any indicator of what’s coming, we’re in for a great time.
After only seeing a handful of Almodovar films, I have quickly become a huge fan. He’s probably my favorite working director right now, his films inspire such love. No one captures so much vibrant color, so perfectly, in one frame. This looks hilarious and great. Can’t wait!
Which ones have you seen?
I’ve seen Talk to Her, Volver, Broken Embraces & The Skin I Live In. At some point I’m going to review my way through his filmography, but for now that’s it.
Well, whenever you do get to his work, be sure to tackle ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER, TIE ME UP TIE ME DOWN, and WOMAN ON THE VERGE in the early going. BAD EDUCATION is pretty amazing too.
I’m all about doing things chronological if I can, so I’ll be starting at the beginning. I’ll definitely get through all of them eventually. My problem is just being too excited about all kinds of movies and creating all these projects to get to eventually, when I already have multiple on-going review projects that I’m doing now. I’m thinking that once I finish reviewing all of Sam Fuller’s films, I start up Almodovar.
