Remember how a few weeks ago, I mentioned that the avoidance of trailers seemed somewhat sanctimonious? This week, I was reminded why.
On Thanksgiving Day, while waiting for my screening of MOMMY to begin (look for a review soon-ish), I got this trailer for the film that just won The People’s Choice Award at TIFF. Now on-paper, this film wasn’t doing much for me. By reputation after it won People’s Choice, it wasn’t doing a whole lot more.
But then I was given a glimpse thanks to this trailer.
Now, I’d hardly call myself a convert…one who has seen the error of his wickedness and has returned back to the flock of prestige cinema. However I do profess to an increased interest in this movie now that I have a small sampling of its look and its energy.
Maybe that’s what a good trailer is supposed to do…
Its worth seeing. It doesn’t know if it wants to be a biography of Turing or a story of the cracking of Enigma, I would have liked to have seen one or the other not a bit of each. The acting is fantastic, it isn’t too early to start talking Oscar nominations!
I’ll definitely be tracking it down now, but your mention about it not knowing what it wants to be leaves me a little wary.
And no – now that we’re almost done October, the speculation can begin…though at this point it’s best kept to what we’ve seen…and not what’s still to come.
