There are a handful of artists out there who colour with every crayon in the box. Then there’s Socalled. There aren’t enough colours in the box for what he wants to colour. Especially since he wants to colour the world using music, magic, art, and film. Every single idea in his head is truly original, and expressing them requires more crayons than Crayola has at their disposal…so says THE SOCALLED MOVIE.
This doc is a loose look at the life of Josh Dolgin, but not in a linear manner outlining his upbringing and career trajectory. Indeed we are dropped smack into the middle of his mad experiments, and immediately handed an apron to watch as his genius is unleashed.
We watch him combine hip hop rhythms with traditional klezmer music. We hear him tell stories of where he has come from, and express various ideas he has swimming around in his head…and even ask if he can drop his own film into the middle of the doc!
His music is hooky, his films are enchanting, and the man himself is a rare mix of self-deprication and ambition. This doc does Socalled and his work justice with a charming rhythm and a playful tone. It will rekindle the most dormant creative embers in its audience, and turn them all into fans of this Canadian genius.
THE “SOCALLED” MOVIE plays tonight – 9:15pm at The Bloor, and again on Tuesday May 4th – 11:30am at The ROM.
Wow this sounds great! I'll have to keep an eye out for it!
