Just yesterday I mentioned that award season was upon us. Well, right on cue, The Independent Spirit Award nominees were announced today. As an Oscar forcaster, they provide a small bit of insight – but precious little (NO DIRECTION HOME led last year’s nominee list and went on to be completely snubbed by The Academy).
If nothing else, it’s a great list of “should-see” suggestions. Best picture list is below. The full nominee list of the major categories can be found after the jump

Has anyone else seen Ballast? I saw it Sundance earlier this year, and it was one of the least enjoyable movies I ever seen. It one awards there too. I totally don’t get it.
Wow, that is interesting news. Ballast is playing here in Toronto at one theatre but I’ve not made it out yet. Trailer looked really dark.
But – YAY a list! Awards season has begun. Now I just have to find my tiara!
Surprised MILK isnt nominated for Best Picture. Its one of the most highest reviewed movies of the year
I was surprised at the absence of MILK too farzan. likewise I'm also puzzled by the exclusion of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.
It was backed by Warner & Fox's indie divisions…shouldn't that qualify it?
Maybe it wasn't "edgy" enough for them.
