Confession: I’m finding it hard to concentrate on movies lately. I’m a Red Sox fan, so it feels like every spare moment is spent wondering if I might be witness to another World Series championship. Not only that, but game nights are automatic ‘don’t make plans’. So while there are easily half a dozen films playing in theatres right now that I’d love to go see, I find myself sitting on the couch, remote in one hand, beer in the other for fourth night out of six.
It’s only the baseball playoffs where I find myself so conflicted. Hockey and basketball both go to playoffs in the spring – hardly the time of year for good cinema. But in October, especially if a team I love (Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, L.A. Dodgers) starts making a playoff run, I start to hum and haw over whether I want to go home and watch game three, or go out and see GONE BABY GONE. The whole sad dance doesn’t stop there. Seems like everything gets back-burnered for baseball…just ask my fiancee.
