Good Weird Feeling

Now that I’ve had a day to digest the continuing oddity of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globes nominations, I thought I’d fire off my annual “wtf” post in reaction to their *ahem* honoured nominees.

For starters, any Oscar poolies might want to wait a moment or two before they consider the ten films listed as this year’s best in class. I’m sure they’re all worth seeing, but there are still a few titles that could knock a few of these ten out of Best Picture contention come Oscar time. A few other observations…

  • Can’t really say that I’d qualify VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA as a comedy.
  • Ralph Fiennes for THE DUCHESS?…..Really???
  • James Franco’s tender role in MILK didn’t make the cut, but his stoner antics in PINEAPPLE EXPRESS are award-worthy?
  • Don’t even get me started on Tom Cruise.
  • At least this year they were able to keep the Best Drama race down to five titles.

After everything, I’m left wondering two things. First, could this be the fourth year in a row that the Golden Globe ‘Best Film’ winner goes on to be shutout by Oscar? And second, is it possible that for the second year in a row, a guild strike wipes The Globes broadcast out completely?

Opening Today…

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (Well done remake, or classic movie hatchet job?)

DOUBT (Rumour has it there are four award worthy performances to be seen)

THE READER (Something tells me it isn’t the feel-good story of the year)

  1. I’m wondering if the Ralph Fiennes nom for The Duchess was because of no room in Best Actor for The Reader. But I’ve seen neither so that is pure speculation.

Are all Woody Allen films tend to be considered as comedies?

It’s an acting heavy week of releases, oh.. and add a touch of scifi 🙂

  2. Ugh. Franco was nominated for Pineapple Express because his performance in that movie was better–more revelatory, you could say–than his performance in Milk. Just because it was a silly stoner movie doesn’t mean he wasn’t brilliant in it. Remember all the way back to August when all that praise was heaped upon him? It would be odd for him *not* have been nominated in the Actor/Comedy category. He really was that good.

Sorry to pick on you, but I keep reading objections of this sort on the internet, and I just don’t get it. It’s a gas that he was nominated in this category, and he deserves to win.

  3. Sorry Phantom – no sale.

Franco was funny in PINEAPPLE EXPRESS…but “Award Worthy” funny? I don’t think so. If I had to nominate anyone from that movie, I’d rather go with Danny McBride. For that matter, if I’m handing out actor nominations for a comedy, I’d begin with either Russell Brand or Jason Segal in FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL.

You’re reading objections of this sort all over the internet because many other besides me don’t understand the HFPA’s mindset when coming up with nominees. They’ve long been known for choosing any A-list name they are fans of, and it seems to be becoming more and more apparent every year.

  4. I’m with PhantomSon. I enjoyed Franco in Milk, but I thought he was brilliant in Pineapple – funny, yes, but better than that. Whatever the quality, Ken Jeong brought it to Role Models as well. And I’m thrilled to see Franco nominated for it; I would’ve thought he’d have cancelled himself out.
