Another day, another batch of year-end awards to discuss. The critics have had their say, and in each case it has made for some interesting choices.
The Los Angeles Critics chose WALL-E as the best film of the year. Danny Boyle was named best director for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. Sean Penn best actor for MILK, and Sally Hawkins best actress for HAPPY GO LUCKY. Supporting Actress went to Penelope Cruz for VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA, and best supporting actor went to Heath Ledger for THE DARK KNIGHT.
On the east coast, the New York Critics named MILK best picture. Mike Leigh was named best director for HAPPY GO LUCKY (pardon?). Sean Penn, Sally Hawkins, and Penelope Cruz all chosen best in class again. New Yorks only other deviation came in best supporting actor where they chose Josh Brolin for MILK.
And last but not least this morning, those wacky cats The Hollywood Foreign Press Association are announcing the nominations for The Golden Globe Awards. I’m sure they have lunacy in store for us once again, check the nominee list after the jump.

I’m literally shocked at the 2 acting noms for Tropic Thunder. Shocked.
I need to find In Bruges though, it’s one film I can’t believe I missed this year!
I haven’t seen TT, but now that it’s available for rent I’ll give it a look (it wasn’t the sort of flick I pay cash to see on a big screen).
Downey Jr. doesn’t surprise me – the guy could read the back of a cereal box and make it entertaining.
Cruise does. That part was a cameo, and if the HFPA is going to start nominating cameos as “supporting roles” then I refuse to take them seriously anymore.
(The press gathered at the announcement actually laughed when Cruise’s name was announced).
Cruise really does surprize to get that nom, especially as it’s 1 of 5 nominees, I mean there were lots of great supporting roles. If it was a cat they split to com/musical and drama I’d not think twice but 1 of 5 of the best of the year? Crazy.
But, on the fact that it was such a small role, even The Academy does that. Judi Dench won for I believe what was 1 scene in Shakesphere in love. Then again, she *is* Judi Dench and it was awesome.
Dench was in three scenes.
*Lawyered* 😉
Oh, snap!!!!
You got me there Hatter!
(although it still was a wee lil role in terms of screen time)
Good list, but im really surprised that MILK didnt get more nominations. I thought that movie was simply great
