It’s a long weekend here in The Great White North, and one which finds me all by my lonesome! Lindsay embarked on what is fast becoming an annual trip down to New York City with our friends to soak up the city and catch some shows. So while she’s getting a much-anticipated dose of Hedwig and The Angry Inch, I’m back here alone.
The funny thing is that I’m actually looking forward to three whole days’ worth of “alone time”. There’s writing to do, and projects to work on. There are people to see, and sleep to catch up on. So while there are many people out there who might go a bit squirrelly without their spouses for four whole days, I don’t count myself as one of them. I’m sure she’ll have fun, I’m sure I’ll get some peace & quiet – everybody wins!
Oh, and speaking of Lindsay, y’all will be happy to know that she met her Kickstarter goal last Saturday evening – so BRAINGASM has been given a much-needed shot-in-the-arm and will continue filming through the summer. Thank-you so very much to everybody who helped spread the word, and especially to everybody who contributed to the campaign. Y’all are good people and I owe you big time!
For now though, here are some Friday distractions for you.
For your listening and reading fulfillment, I give you…
This week I was pointed towards a Toronto-based podcast that has been on the go for a little over a year. What She’s Having is a show dedicated to romantic-comedies and hosted by three local lasses named Alia, Lisa, and Jenna (and under the heading of “small world”, I used to work with Lisa!). Our fearless hosts have some great chemistry and have covered a wide range of rom-coms over their sixty-plus episodes – everything from PRETTY WOMAN to THE APARTMENT. As I type, the most recent episode available is #61 – HAPPY ACCIDENTS…though I’d wager there’s a new one coming later today.
Count me as one who’s super-stoked for GODZILLA this weekend…if only to discover who’s telling the truth: the great swaths of love, or the scattered puddles of scorn. Over at The Mezzanine, Andrew Crump lands somewhere closer to the former with his review.
The Cannes Film festival is in full-flight right now, and I’m beginning to think that it’s an event I’m going to have to bump up the ol’ bucket list. Bonjour Tristesse is keeping a close eye on all the goings-on, so if you’re looking for the lowdown from The Riviera, the man has you covered.
It seems a little odd to plug a plug, but that’s precisely what I’m doing. Shala Thomas has occasionally written about fashion in film and is looking to give that series a boost and get the engine going again. Take a look at her summary and drop her an email with your favorite instances of cinematic style.
One TIFF 2013 film that I really loved was Richard Ayoade’s THE DOUBLE, which is slowly starting to make the rounds through the art house circuit. Amir caught up with the film, and while he wasn’t quite as over the moon about it as I was, he still has great things to say.
Time has really gotten away from Young Miss Taylor during her first year at uni, so much so that she is still in the throes of wrapping-up 2013. This week, she tallied up her favorite male performances…try not to be too surprised by number one.
As a lover of a good screenplay, I’ve long been fascinated by The Black List and all its up’s and down’s. This week Andy Hart jotted down a few thoughts about the phenomenon, including the mild irony of its name.
For the Tweet of The Week this time around, allow me to say this – we should all be as witty on Twitter as Alex Huls is…
Pro Tip: Whenever you hit "Send" on a Tweet, quietly whisper "Release the kraken" to yourself.

Enjoy!
Thanks for the link – though I am doing pretty well in doing my top lists in May as opposed to July!
My pleasure Young Taylor. We’ll always have June!
