I had to smile this past Monday.

As I was writing about films so few of you had seen, I noticed the chatter around this space ease off.  When that was all over, I wrote about a film that everybody had seen, and again the chatter eased off. Who’d have seen that coming?

I’m still in a bit of a post-Hot-Docs haze, but a weekend of rest oughta do me good. Perhaps I’ll get my head cleared in time to record my first full Matineecast in three and a half weeks. The other thing I need to wonder is whether or not I’ll pull the trigger on DARK SHADOWS, which seems to be getting critically slammed.

I might bite the bullet anyway, since without that there are no films I’m anticipating until June.

So enjoy your Friday folks, I’m putting the finishing touches on a wickedly long watchlist post for tomorrow.

For your listening and reading fulfillment, I give you…

MaMo has been crushing it lately. I couldn’t choose just one episode since there’s Action Fest coverage, Ebertfest coverage, and Avengers coverage all within a wildly small span of time. If you aren’t subscribing to their podcast, you really should be.

Speaking of THE AVENGERS, Jess had the idea to stack the roster with some ass-kickin’ ladies. Take a look at her choices and likewise the interesting discussion it spawned in the comment section.

This week was Ruth’s 9th wedding anniversary, and she celebrated it by dedicating a post to her husband Ivan. Appropriately, the post collected some of the best husbands in movie history.

As a big Rolling Stones fan, I’ve always been fascinated by GIMME SHELTER. It’s the rare sort of rock documentary that truly evolves into something else as it happened to capture a truly black day in the history of rock & roll. Journeys in Classic Film took a look at it this week, and was quite smitten with it on the whole.

The trickiest thing about trying to write every night is those odd weeknights when the idea for the next day’s post just. isn’t. coming. Vance had that happen to him this week, and took solace by sharing the frustration of his writer’s block.

One of my favorite series of posts out there is Yojimbo’s “Don’t Make a Scene” entries. With 007 on many people’s minds these days, he reaches for one of the greats – the Connery-starring THUNDERBALL.

As for the Tweet of The Week…well…if ever something was “Very James Blake Ewing”, it’d be sentiments like this:

Enjoy!

  1. I’m in no way apprehensive about seeing DARK SHADOWS. Heck, I’ve all but stopped reading film reviews all together (sometimes I’ll read them after the fact), since when it comes down to it, the only opinion that matters is my own.

  2. Thank you good sir! Glad you appreciate my ‘best movie husbands’ post, hey it takes one to know one, right? 😀

I might see DARK SHADOWS this weekend, I don’t always agree w/ critics anyway and the trailer looks like a hoot!

    1. You’re too kind.
It’s shaping up to be a bit of a busy weekend, so that might prove to be the death knell for screenings in general this weekend…but we’ll see.

  3. Speaking of critical responses did you read the fallout between Samuel L. Jackson and A.O. Scott? Fairly entertaining.

    1. Welcome to The Matinee Kristen!
And you’re most welcome for the linkage – that look on Mick’s face at the end gets me every single time.
