Now Playing Stoker

Have we finally arrived at the thaw?

After what seems like a particularly cold and bitter January and February, has the sun started to shine down upon our theatre-going ways and show us the way out of this dreadful winter? I ask this as a fan of STOKER…as one curious about OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL…as one encouraged by BURT WONDERSTONE…and as one highly anticipating UPSTREAM COLOR.

I suppose the upshot of the cinematic wasteland that we’re finally emerging from is that it allowed me to catch up on a lot of at-home classic watching without temptation of what I might be missing at the multiplex up the street. Since we’ve turned the calendar, I have been quite taken by STORIES WE TELL, ZERO DARK THIRTY, and WARM BODIES (along with the aforementioned STOKER). However, none of them have been able to hold a candle to the delights my blu-ray player and PVR have brought me.

For instance, I’d happily trade them all plus a player to be named later for the joy I got from MIDNIGHT…or A GENTLEMAN’S AGREEMENT…or THE ‘BURBS.

I suppose then the hope is that the coming week will bring candidates to join the list of untouchables, and less trade bait.

The Row Three Cinecast got back to their double-barrel ways this week. Even with only two-thirds of the three musketeers on-hand, they still managed to clock in over three hours and get into a few spirited discussion.

I’ve recently started following a nifty site called The Cinematic Frontier that’s run by a gent named Louis in New York City. With the arrival of OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL this weekend, Louis has taken a moment to reflect on the work of composer Danny Elfman.

This week, I asked both Anna and Catherine “Why Movies?” – here’s Anna’s answer, and here’s Catherine’s.

I’ve added a link to the last Blindspot entry, but Andy Buckle’s February Blindspot post on Ordet bears repeating.

I usually try not to link to the same site in back-to-back weeks, but Andina is celebrating 400 posts at Inspired Ground. Considering my own milestone this week, it seems wrong not to point an arrow to such proficiency. In honour of her quadricentennial, Andina has put up a post dedicated to the on-screen style of one of her favorite actresses, Carey Mulligan.

At the risk of patting myself on the back, Dan Heaton (who is a proud new papa!) had some wonderful things to say this week about The Matineecast.

Up at the coop, Chris has posted a review of the criminally underexposed BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO

Last but not least is The Droid, who has created a handsome graphic illustrating how movie tastes change over the course of our lives.

For the Tweet of The Week, a local critic sums things up rather nicely:
