Falcon

Know what folks? I’m looking at what’s coming down the line, and it’s looking like we’re in for a fun few weeks.

For starters, here in Toronto The Lightbox is bringing in films as varied as L’ATLANTE, SOME LIKE IT HOT, INFERNAL AFFAIRS, and GHOSTBUSTERS…so, y’know, there’s that.

Back at the multiplex, I’m pretty chuffed to see THE WAY WAY BACK, PACIFIC RIM, FRUITVALE STATION, ONLY GOD FORGIVES, BLUE JASMINE, and I’M SO EXCITED.

It feels like an embarrassment of riches, really…like an entire case of fine wine to offset the cheeseburgers the big studios want us to feast on around this time of year.

Any of them you’re particularly looking forward to?

For your listening and reading fulfilment, I give you…

I do so enjoy hearing my friends get together to discuss things they are so passionate about. In that vein, there have been few things that I’ve enjoyed more than Alex Kittle’s appearance on Movies You Love Podcast to discuss SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN.

Meanwhile, with July arriving on Monday, a lot of writers are looking backwards on 2013 so far…and they are liking what they’ve seen. Here’s Andrew Robinson’s Top Ten of 2013, with a surprising choice at number one. (Sidenote: Should double linkage for GMan mean I now bench him for a month?)

Curious what my choice for top dog of 2013 so far would be? Well, Terry Malloy has reviewed it for his Pigeon Coop.

In Matineecast 88 I’ll make mention of John LaRue, he of The Droid You’re Looking For. But before we get to that, and before I explain why I tip my cap to him on-air, he checks in mid-year to see how some filmgoing new year’s resolutions are coming along.

It feels like it’s been ages since I’ve linked to one of Yojimbo’s ‘Don’t Make a Scene’ posts…and that’s criminal. Check out his breakdown of a great moment in THE MALTESE FALCON.

As a devoted Filmspotting listener, I found my curiosity piqued earlier this year when they did a blaxploitation marathon. Sadly, I haven’t done anything about it yet as far as actually watching the films they discussed…but they’re all on the list. As if to give me another reminder, Rich Watson dropped a few words on SUPER FLY yesterday. Gotta get my ass in gear…

Then there’s the Tweet of The Week, which for me was easily the most exciting news of the last seven days…

Enjoy!

  1. SO… of the films you’re excited for at the theatre I will get to see PACIFIC RIM at my theatre…

Thanks for the links :)… Laser Eyes rules all.

PS. Alex was singing your praises off the recording 🙂

  2. Only God Forgives tops my list at the moment, but I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for Before Midnight to hit a theatre within driving distance.

    1. I’d forgotten about Cannes actually. I was just going off its recent run with the Sydney Film Festival, where people came away from it slightly befuddled, yet it still went on to take top prize.

But you’re right – getting booed at Cannes is something of a badge of honour!

  3. If you liked my post on SUPER FLY, next week I’m gonna see ACROSS 110TH STREET.

I was all psyched over PACIFIC RIM but I’m starting to get a slightly bad vibe from it. I could be wrong though.

    1. One of these days, I’m just gonna sit down and mainline the Blaxploitation essentials (Cooly High is another one I’m anxious to visit).

I’m trying to stay positive about Pacific Rim – seeing it in two days! – and have actually started to block out trailers and the like.

  4. The Story of Film: An Odyssey is something I need to get my hands on. I’ve heard mixed things about the narrator but only positive comments for the series as a whole.

    1. Hey Leith – been a while!

The Story of Film is truly incredible, and while the narration might feel a bit dry in moments, Cousins really has a way of underlining details and technique that you may never have otherwise noticed.

Check to see if TCM New Zealand will be airing the episodes, and if they are, follow along with them starting in September…along with the airings of the titles discussed.
