So, how do you guys like the new doofiness?

When I mentioned to jess Rogers that I was getting my mitts on a new set of headphones, she responded by saying “Is it my imagination, or have you been buying a lot of headphones lately?” She’s not entirely wrong.

My Beats by Dre headphones suddenly started flaking out on me (the audio was crackling), and for some silly reason, nobody is really able to fix them (Beats will only send refurbished replacements for the first year). When that happened back in June, I bought myself a cheap-ish pair of Sony’s to replace them. Well just a few months in, the audio in them started to crackle too. At least this time I still had the bill and was able to exchange them.

Hence the new doofiness you see above: MDR-XB600’s if you care.

Admittedly, they come out off my head more than any other pair I’ve owned. So I am taking the doofiness to a whole new level. Small price to pay for great sound.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to listen to some HAIM.

I was having a rough day on Tuesday, and then I put on Episode 11 of Across the Universe. Hearing the ladies’ enthusiastic conversation about sci-fi really upped my mood in a hurry.

Dan throws in for the obstructions blog-a-thon by examining what the future holds for cinema.

If all goes to plan, I should have a review of 12 YEARS A SLAVE for you tomorrow. In the meantime, do check out what Candice has to say about it.

Last weekend, I participated in a list of naming The Best 70’s Movies over at Movie Mezzanine. The comment section turned into the sort of comment section you’d expect on such a post, which inspired Katina to write something of a retort about the art of lists. A great read (PS, My thoughts on lists can be found here)

Many signs have been pointing me back six years to the autumn of 2007’s ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD. I haven’t seen it since the theatres, and I’m beginning to believe it’s time I remedied that. Until I do, I’ll kill time basking in Malloy’s glowing review.

With TCFF coming up, Ruth is asking folks about their favorite festival-going or special screening memories. There are some great answers submitted so far so take a look (and leave a comment!)

One of my favorite selections from TIFF this past September was the musical SUNSHINE ON LEITH – based on the music of The Proclaimers. CAZ caught up with it this week and seemed to take good things away from it too!

Finally, in light of all the attention GRAVITY is getting, I think it should be required reading that everyone stop what they’re doing and revisit 2006’s CHILDREN OF MEN. Norma Desmond agrees.

  1. Thanks for the link, Ryan! I’m definitely on the cheap side with headphones. I just keep buying $8 Sony ear buds, and they last about as long as you’d expect. Still, I usually get about enough time to make them seem worthwhile. It sounds like the expensive ones don’t always work so hot either. They’re not designed for super users!

    1. It all depends.

My cans are with me and in/out of my bag every single day…so I certainly get my use out of them. Discounting the crummy ones I bought in June, that means I always get 18 – 24 months of heavy use out of whatever model I buy.

I’d never drop *serious* coin (read: More than $150) on headphones unless they were just going to stay in the home.

    1. Mos def! My sister in law has asked for a copy on vinyl for Christmas…perhaps I should buy that on the way home and just get the ball rolling!

Ooh – that reminds me! I’ll also be able to get great use out of them next week when Reflektor finally drops!!

  2. Thanks for including my post, Ryan! I know you’ve got some awesome TIFF experience in the past, I remember that one w/ Joseph Gordon-Levitt in particular 😉
