ferris wheelI’m this close to giving in folks. No part of me has really wanted to go see titles like THE LAST STAND or WARM BODIES, but the studios just aren’t interested in giving us anything better for at least another week. So I might just have to bite the bullet, drop my expectations, and go see one of these fluffy offerings.

Who knows, it might even be good for me!

In the meantime, while I nurse a sore throat, I’m soaking up THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH. It’s got its moments in an old-school-Hollywood sort of way, but it’s no SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN (which wasn’t even nominated the year this film won Best Picture).

Anyway gang, hopefully y’all are seeing good titles in this cinematic wasteland. Here’s some of the hurlyburly around the blogosphere to tide you over until the lights go down.

For your listening and reading fulfilment, I give you…

The FIlm Jive boys are back for 2013. They kick off the new year with a great discussion on DJANGO UNCHAINED.

Chantal is back from Sundance – a festival I find myself wanting to attend more and more every year – and has this recap of her adventures.

Ruth poses an interesting question over at Flix Chatter: she wonders about films containing good ideas that were poorly executed.

A few weeks ago, my friend Fogs wondered how anyone could dislike THE IMPOSSIBLE (guilty). This week, my friend Andrew Robinson watched it and provided me a little bit of back-up.

The Droid made some New Year’s Resolutions that were all film related.. With January coming to an end (!!!) he checks in to track his progress.

Sebastian Gutierrez has slowly been putting together a list of his favorite films from the last three years (The Decade So Far). And while I don’t completely agree with the three he’s chosen so far, I have to give the man points for going ‘off-book’ – like this week where he tapped Matt Reeves’ LET ME IN.

At The Film Annex, Colin has taken a somewhat controversial position – he proposes that violence in film is actually a good thing. Read his reasons why.

Finally, Jessica caught up with SECRETARY this week and was taken with its mild kink. Bets on how long it takes her to crack a copy of “50 Shades of Grey”?

Meanwhile the Tweet of The Week comes from the sunny shores of Tobago, where Andrew James from Row Three “put a ring on it” this week:

    1. Yah, I heard that Warm Bodies was quite good. Then again, I’m excited to see it because Nicholas Hoult is hot. Yeah…I have my film-loving priorities set straight.

  1. Man, everyone’s gotta stop being so judgey about THE LAST STAND. That movie is FUN and I don’t get why people are being weirdly hard on it? Or is it just everyone is assuming it’s going to suck and are commenting on it without seeing it? Anyway, you could do worse!

    1. I actually was trying to find LAST STAND, but I think I missed my window since it isn’t playing at any of the nearby theatres (I woulda had to subway 20 minutes).

I’ll catch up with it for some fun times as soon as I see a chance.

  2. Thank you for the kind mentioning. I did download a free sample to my iphone to check out what50 Shades of Grey was about after hearing all the buzz. But alas: no kink to be spotted there. I reckon they want to keep the goodies for those who pay…

    1. Don’t do it.

From what I’ve understood, kink or no kink, they’re terribly written. What’s been most amusing to me is how unashamed everyone has been about reading it in public.

  3. Much obliged for the link, Ryan. Hey, THE LAST STAND was fun! It’s not gonna win any awards (well outside maybe MTV Movie Awards) but it was darn entertaining and hilarious. I’m not ashamed to say I enjoyed it immensely 🙂
