As the dog days arrive, I’m hitting the road.
This weekend brings about my annual roadtrip to catch some out-of-town baseball, with the destination of choice being Minneapolis to see the somewhat woeful Twins play the far-more-woeful Astros. I’m remiss to say that I won’t be in town for very long, so I didn’t plan any sort of meet-up like last summer’s gathering in Chicago. Pity, because I do know a few people in MSP that it would have been nice to have a drink with.
I’m sure plenty will be shared through Twitter and Instagram, so follow me there if you don’t already.
But you don’t think me being out of town means that this site will be going on vacation, do you? Blasphemy. The writing will be going on auto-pilot for a few days, so do check in for new content. I had planned on doing a short series in honour of my trip, but in the end went with something far more low-key.
Interestingly, all of this running around means I might not get to a movie this weekend (though there is talk of that too). Ordinarily, I wouldn’t think twice about sitting things out for a few days, except that right now there continues to be an absolute wealth of great-looking films in Toronto! BLUE JASMINE arrives this week, 20 FEET FROM STARDOM continues its run, FRUITVALE STATION still remains to be seen, and THE ACT OF KILLING begins its final week (if I didn’t miss it already).
Seriously folks, it’s beginning to seem like I could go out Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of every week and not run of cinematic nourishment. What have I done to deserve this?
So while I finish packing, allow me to turn things over to my friends and neighbours.

For your listening and reading fulfilment, I give you…

The guys at Mamo put together one of their most unique shows. The evening they finished it, I had a drink with them mere moments later. When I asked Matthew Brown what they talked about, he said “nothing”. He’s right, and he’s wrong all at once. It’s hard to explain, but fascinating to hear, so just listen.
There’s been a lot of talk in these post-Comic-Con days about the nature of hype and the fandom machine. One of the most interesting that I’ve come across lately is a piece by Courtney Small where he examines the role of stingers and the buzz they create. Considering the stinger for THE WOLVERINE was one of the biggest ones yet, this piece is very timely.
I remain rather curious about LOVELACE, but find myself gun-shy on coughing up the price of admission. This week Joe at Black Sheep caught up with the Amanda Seyfried film, and has given it a ringing endorsement. Do I dare?
Nick Prigge finds himself with ass-kicking heroines this week; he’s even gone so far as to group them into divisions!
Save another seat at the TIFF drink-up: Anna The Movie Nut is on her way. Before she gets here, take a moment and check out her thoughts on Jane Austen as she compares Ang Lee’s SENSE AND SENSIBILITY to its source novel.
Speaking of Toronto, I’d like to introduce all the locals to Kate Bradford who writes Kate Has a Blog. She’s actually excited to become a part of our movie-loving broken social scene, so try to behave yourselves and not scare her off, m’kay?
Ever heard the term “Bechdel Test” and wonder what the heck that was referring to? The Pigeon Coop has you covered.

Enjoy!
Thanks for the linkage, man! Can’t wait for TIFF!
You have no idea…
*Blush* Thanks for the shout-out, Ryan! I’m excited to get to know some of my fellow Toronto bloggers and emerge from my reclusive writer-cave. Have a great long-weekend!
You’re most welcome, and I’m sure many of the locals will enjoy meeting you too. Now get out of that writer-cave and come bask in the sun with the rest of us.
Thanks much! Appreciate it!
Dude, you have to see “20 Feet From Stardom.” It’s one of the best I’ve seen this year.
Now that the craziness of my household’s dual road trips is in the past, I can get back to seeing movies. Look for some thoughts about it on the coming weeks.
Thank for the link love, sir.
I hope to make it out to the August pub and want to hear all about your ballpark excursions this summer.
Anytime mate! Some of the ballpark evidence is on Facebook already, with more to come in the next day or two.
The next pub night, we’ll also have to compare TIFF schedules.
Thanks for the link Ryan, much appreciated sir! Enjoy your trip!
