I’ve long held a certain affinity for Boston, so to see such things happen there strikes a particular nerve. It’s actually eerie, because just a few weeks ago I read a book by Dennis Lehane called The Given Day, which is set there in the years after World War I. In the book, Boston is in a state of unrest due to unfair working conditions and a growing red scare. In some ways, it was hard for me to envision a North American city under siege like that…and then real life reminded me.
I’m not going to offer up an opinion on what has happened or what it means, mostly because I think there is so much still to be understood. I will say that in times like this, I’m reminded of the Hemingway quote used in SE7EN:
“The world is a fine place and worth fighting for”
Of course, in SE7EN, Det. Somerset follows the quote by saying “I agree with the first part”. To me though, it’s a whole truth. I hope that we can continue to fight such terrible action, but fight it with togetherness.

For your listening and reading fulfilment, I give you…
The Row Three boys are back with a classic-length episode on a par with your average David Lean film. Listen in as they grumble about TRANCE and hail the latest episode of Game of Thrones.
I’ve linked to Alex Kittle’s artwork in the past – and am linking to her for the second week in a row – but this week I link to it with artwork higher degree of pride and giddiness. A month or so ago, I asked Alex if I could commission her to create a DVD jacket for GIRL WALK // ALL DAY and she came back with this piece of awesome. I don’t know about y’all, but my order will be going in shortly.
I feel myself somewhat tempted to see OBLIVION this week, despite my better judgement. Andy Hart was able to take advantage of it being released internationally first, and has come back with a review that tips me a little further towards seeing it.
Sometimes I think I take the joys of going to a cinema for granted. At Films and Coke, Elena has put up a post about the simple pleasures that come with visiting her favorite theatre, and for me it reads as a reminder on the joys that can come with the price of an admission ticket.
It’s been a bit quieter around the office this week, and that’s because one of my filmgoing buddies is off on vay-cay. Tim from The Mind Reels is in the Caribbean for The Bermuda International Film Festival – and has been cranking out the content with vigour while he’s been away!
A film that I’ve been looking forward to ever since I heard good things at TIFF is KON TIKI, which was nominated for Best Picture. My desire to see it has grown even higher since I finally caught a trailer for it before TRANCE. I might want to temper my expectations a little, since my favorite Swede Jessica has put up a review where she walked away from it somewhat mixed.
Down in The Windy City, Nick Prigge takes us on a ride of a certain iconic ferris wheel.
Finally, this week The Silver Emulsion celebrated its third blog-a-versary. Drop by Will’s space and raise a glass.

As for the Tweet of The Week, I must turn to mark Duplass who sure knows how to make one feel crummy about themselves:

Peace!
Thank you so much for the link and also thanks for the kind words about my city!
You’re most welcome. Be well!
Appreciate the shout out! That was one of those posts where something catches my fancy and I’m not entirely sure if will catch anyone else’s fancy the way it caught mine. Glad you enjoyed it.
Sometimes I have to really hold myself back from writing 100 words about one tiny detail in a film (I’ve always been enamoured by Penny Lane’s coat in ALMOST FAMOUS).
Keep ’em coming.
Hey there! Thank you for the link love. I wouldn’t talk anyone out of watching it. It looks nice if nothing else. It’s just that it lacked the… I don’t know how to put it… inner fire or something.
The documentary on the other hand is definitely something a doc junkie like you should look up!
I’m still waiting for KON-TIKI to get its release over here, but hopefully in the coming weeks. Once I see it, I’ll be sure to follow it with the doc.
Speaking of, take a glance at my post for EXPEDITION TO THE END OF THE WORLD – totally strikes me as being up your alley.
Thanks for the link, Ryan!
Anytime mate!
