Everybody’s Talkin’ 8-2 (Chatter from Fellow Bloggers)

Its a long weekend again here in Canada, which gives us lots of time to get out and enjoy some sunshine…catch up on things around the house…and, y’know, not blog!

Works out nicely since I don’t have a whole lot to write about today anyhow, though a matinee of FUNNY PEOPLE should go a long way towards fixing that. However, in the meantime, I thought I’d link to some of what my fellow movie geeks are writing about.

So, for your reading fulfillment I give you…

The Rest Is Cream Cheese went out and saw FUNNY PEOPLE before me. Here’s what she thought.

Fandango Groovers Movie Blog takes a moment or two to reconsider this decade’s Best Actor Oscar winners.

Bike Mike swims upstream and argues in defense of BRÜNO.

Finally, The Flick Chick reviewed THE HURT LOCKER this week, which think is especially important since it is rolling out to more screens this weekend, and for my money is the best movie in theatres right now.

Enjoy!

  1. Hey Ryan,

It's been a while since we've talked movies. I've read your review as well as The Chick Flick and while I agree with most points, there's one glaring thing that most reviewers are totally ignoring: the inaccuracy of what those soldiers were allowed to do. Trev's seen many a war film and as far as protocol is concerned, the film was quite indulgent in allowing the soldiers to act in a way that wouldn't be tolerated. There's no way James would be allowed to go in an diffuse a bomb and throw off his headset without having repercussions. There's no way the specialists would be the *only two* people backing him up while tens/a hundred (?) people watched James diffusing. When the snipers attacked the contractors and soldiers, an airstrike would have been called in. When Morse angrily comes over and questions James on how many bombs he's dealt with and then…what, nothing? Nothing came of that whole scene! Yes, the movie was good showing that some soldiers are addicted to the highs of combat and can't cope with civilian life, but it took much "willing suspension of disbelief" to make that point.

  2. @ C… Don't get me wrong, THE HURT LOCKER isn't any sort of documentary. There are one or two moments in it where truth gets…slanted.

It's the overall tone and tension that makes it work.
