If ever there was a week where my movie geekery ran amok, it’s this week. It began with a movie night surrounded by friends, moved on to a bar night spent arguing with movie geeks, and culminated with three screenings in a row (FOOTLOOSE, HOOP DREAMS, and THE INTERRUPTERS for the curious).
Of course, all of this gets capped off by me running all over hell’s half-acre to three different Thanksgiving dinners. Thus Ryan repeats the trend of getting out of a stretch of time off more tired than he was going in. One of these days I’ll get it right.
I have a lot of content coming down the pipe, including a boatload of reviews in the next week or so, and three consecutive weeks’ worth of Matineecasts beginning this weekend. Hoping y’all will drop by early and often, but as I get ready to soak up some documentary goodness tonight, do take a look at what some of my compatriots are up to these days.
For your listening and reading fulfillment, I give you…
The Franklies have a badass episode where they talk DRIVE, violent films, and sing!
Perhaps the most heartfelt post of the week comes from the keyboard of Stevee Taylor as she explains why she’s looking forward to Steven Spielberg’s WAR HORSE.
A new release that’s getting a slow roll-out this month is MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, which was a film I quite enjoyed at TIFF. While I try to get my butt in gear and review it up proper, give a look-see to Alex’s review of the film, then keep an eye out for it coming to your town.
Marc wants to market a new line of lunchboxes. Not too sure if they’ll catch on though…
A nice complimentary post to my quest to up my horror literacy comes from Jandy over at Row Three. She has compiled a handy little compendium of classic horror films that are high on the creep and low on the gore.
My new follow of the week is Cinema Enthusiast, and while I look forward to reading more of her long-form content, soaking up her watchlist for the second half of September was pretty interesting given the massive amount of badass films she soaked up.
Finally, for the Tweet of The Week…well…there’s this…

Enjoy!
I hope you’re willing to deal with the long term ramifications if #ryaniswrong catches on and begins to seep out into an applicable description of your fellow name compatriots. The Tribunal Counsel of Ryans tasked me with passing along your punishment for already spreading ill of the name. They determined revoking your weekend pass to Ryanland for three straight weeks and rights to refer to yourself in the third person for a two month period be proper. I thought it a bit harsh myself, but you know how they are about name recognition. A lot on the line with Gosling, Seacrest, and Reynolds in the public spotlight.
I’m actually hoping #ryaniswrong does not catch on – since no one likes being wrong that often – but if it does, I wager the entire universe will know full-well which Ryan it is that is wrong.
Thanks for the link, Ryan! It was a fun post to put together and I found a whole bunch I want to watch and revisit myself!
Anytime Jandy! There were quite a few in there that I too added to the queue.
Heyyyy thanks for the link! I look forward to reading your full review of the film! It’s one of my favorites of the year so far. And yay for Cinema Enthusiast! She’s in Boston and is the first blogger I’ve met in real life and she’s awesome. And oh man I know, she watches a crazy amount of amazing movies, it’s humbling!
And in just a few weeks you’ll be meeting several more bloggers in real life!
Oh man I know! So psyched!
Awwww, thanks for the link, Ryan! Sounds like you’ve had a good week…have fun with all of the Thanksgiving dinners!
I shall, and thank-you for letting me know that I’m not the only person looking forward to WAR HORSE.
Have you seen the second trailer? It looks so schmaltzy, but in that wonderful Spielbergian way. In anyone else’s hands, that movie would just be over the top, but he’s so skilled at the craft that he somehow makes it look amazing.
