Some of you might hear my opening remark of this episode and get nervous about spoilers, but fear not. While the first thing I say in the seventy-plus minutes of this show is “How’d you like the finale of Breaking Bad?”, neither I, nor my guest get into anything specific. It’s all just a minute or less of general impressions, with no specific details discussed. For all I know, it’s a moot point, but if not – apologies for anyone who’s still working their way through Breaking Bad and trying to stay “spoiler-free”.

While I’m apologizing for things, let me also apologize for the state of the audio of this episode. Seems as though the night we recorded tis, Skype decided to drop out for a second every ten minutes or so. The result might sound like your MP3 is skipping. Fortunately for your device – and unfortunately for my show – it’s the track. To me the thrust of the conversation isn’t affected, so hopefully my apology is sufficient.

Besides, at least three of the next four shows are live and won’t have such problems.

Be gentle with my guest…it was her first time.

  1. You didn’t even mention how most of the scene in ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW that give imporant plot information are either:
    a) Shot on a set (or in the hotel rooms).
    b) Very obviously shot against a green screen.

As such, it all makes the the guerrilla filmmaking thing even more useless.

I also wasn’t too crazy about how the film resorted to sexual innuendo and (literal) toilet humour. That caused an already underwhelming film to crash and burn for me.

  2. Thanks again Ryan for inviting me on. I had a fabulous time. I apologize for the moments where I seem to interrupt you! I honestly couldn’t hear at the time that you had started to say something.

For this week’s Feedback Question I have to say The Women (1939). That final shot of Norma Shearer holding out her arms and running to her off-screen husband has irked me all my life. If I had it my way, her character wouldn’t have gone back to him, but of course the Code would never have allowed that.

Sean – You are right, we never got around to that aspect but it’s definitely something I noticed. It makes for a very awkward experience/structure.

  3. I love following Catherine’s tumblr and never heard of this podcast (and your from my hometown too!). Great content and going to subscribe. One comment: As a guy who has worked in radio as an announcer and a producer, watch vocal music in the background when you are talking over it. It really splits the listener’s attention and your clips of tunes can be at least half as long. Skype sound is better than a lot of other podcasts I’ve heard. I really like this podcast and geeking out on movies. Looking forward to hearing more.

    1. Welcome to The Matinee, Steve!

I’m always wrestling with the music, so thanks for the note. I’ll work on that. Head’s up though, the year-end show that’ll drop on New Year’s Eve has omni-present bed music. If possible, I might see if I can include a music-free version this year.

Anyway, thanks for tuning in, and hopefully you’ll dig into some of the back episodes…or even spread the word! Heh – and if you’re a local boy, I’d be happy to introduce you to a whole host of like-minded folk who gather to eat, drink, and argue about film.

  4. Yeah sorry Ryan I am in Ottawa right now but may be moving back soon. So I will let you know. I can’t believe I said “your from my hometown” I meant you’re (You Are!). I blame my iPhone,

  5. Well, you know already how I feel about the music in the background. What Steve said. To me the music is distracting and sometimes takes over so I don’t hear what you say. But again: that’s not big news coming from me.

The question about movies where I’d like to change the ending: I have severals to pick from. A classic example is Blade Runner. I don’t hate the voice over and forced happy end as much as some people do, but I still perfer the directors cut.

A more recent film where I’d rather see a different ending is the final Harry Potter movie. I don’t hate the scene as such, it’s fine in the novel, but those young actors in terrible makeup just didn’t look believable on the screen. The audience fell into laughter, which hardly can have been the intention. They could as well have left that to the imagination.

  6. It’s not a music bed that I have issue with, just one with vocals. Listening to someone speak with a bed of music with vocals in it at similar volume confuses my attention. In contrast I think a good “in the background” instrumental music bed of around 25-30% volume lends a bit of energy to a podcast. Just my two cents (which I guess we round down now in Canada, ha ha).
