Last Sunday, I got up pretty damned early and turned on my podcasting mic. Despite a thirteen hour time difference, and a slight weariness on my side, a wonderful piece of film discussion was captured for posterity as Matineecast 90.
Some five hours later, a breakfast table discussion prompted me to take a seat on the balcony, and turn my mic on again. Thus, yet another film discussion was captured for posterity as Matineecast 91.
But what of episode 90?
Well, for a litany of reasons, I decided to hold on to episode 90 until this week, despite all evidence pointing towards me not being able to count. If you listen closely to the end of episode 90, it still seems like I’m unable to count. But it should all get back to normal by episode 92.
Back to the matter at hand, I’m very happy to finally be able to sit down with this guest, and if there was ever a person worth getting up at 7:30 on a Sunday, she’s it.
Here’s what’s in store in episode ninety…

EDGAR WRIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I didn’t even have to think.
I really like Me and You and Everyone We Know. It’s weird but cool. Some really lovely scenes.
The more I think about Only God Forgives, the lesser I like it. I loved Thomas though. And the fight scene.
I despise The Notebook too. Hi5!! Drive <3
My current favorite new(ish) directors are Rian Johnson, Nacho Vigalondo, and Julie Delpy. I think they’re all great directors who are re-imagining genres in ways that liven up old tropes. I’m especially interested in Delpy’s directorial career after seeing 2 Days in Paris/New York where she manages to write really genuine, unfortunate, and claustrophobic comedy.
Based on the discussion I’ll probably leave ONLY GOD FORGIVES to a future Netflix rental, but it was fun to listen to the conversation on the MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE. I saw it at a theater this past spring for, I think the first time since high school, and enjoyed how well it’s held up against the test of time.
Thanks for listening Allison!
Hey, in related news, did you get to watch a Blindspot film this month?
Unfortunately not. I’m going to try and catch up in August, but we’ll see.
Always love listening to your podcasts even when it’s an episode that has 3 movies that I haven’t seen before. I really should check out Drive at some point in time, I think it’s one that I would enjoy.
As for a new director, while I haven’t seen much from him, I really admire the drive of Jason Trost aka J-Tro. He actually made The FP and his second movie originally called Vs. now called All Superheroes Must Die about 3 years before they got an official release. He’s someone who wanted to be an actor, but everyone told him that with his eyepatch he would only get cast as henchmen and similar roles, so he made roles for himself by making his own movies, and that’s pretty damn admirable. He may still need to work on his craft, but I think he’s got the drive down pat.
This comment made me wickedly happy. I’m always of the understanding that people skip the parts of my shows when I start rapping about titles they haven’t seen.
Thank-you sir, lots more where that came from in the coming weeks.
