I should have eschewed my usual opening and started off this show by saying “welcome back to my balcony”. It was such a beautiful day here in Toronto that we decided to take the whole operation outside for the second time in three episodes. Hopefully the sounds of construction and idling dump trucks don’t distract too badly.

Listening back to this episode, I really feel a bit dumb. As I mention within the span of the show, it took me far too long to get this gentleman back on to a full episode of my show…and once I got him back, he brought the goods. It’s not just today’s guest, there are nine or ten people I can think of that give good audio. Makes me think I should tear up my rulebook and just start dipping into the same talent pool repeatedly.

Perhaps…

Back to today’s action, suffice it to say you’re in for good times.

Here’s what’s in store in episode eighty-seven…

    1. Oh what, did you get the impression that I was calling Price a local god? Further, didn’t you wonder why two shows in a row started with the same track?

    2. No I thought you were calling SUPERMAN a Local God. I thought that was fucking brilliant. you’ve ruined me! You’ve ruined everything!!

    3. Pipe down, drama queen.
Just glanced at prospective titles for next June – should I count on you calling “dibs” on HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2?

  1. FULL DISCLOSURE – My comments/complaint about tent pole movies trading in convolution at the expense of fun were not wholly my own. I should have credited Film Crit Hulk and his article “The Age of the Convoluted Blockbuster”. Apologies, I should have clearly credited him in the moment, and I did not through my own failings. Link to the article (which is excellent) is here: http://badassdigest.com/2013/06/12/film-crit-hulk-smash-the-age-of-the-convoluted-blockbuster/

  2. Not trying to pick on you but George Bailey is everything I never want to be. I get why he’s a good person and all, but I live in fear of having to give up my dreams because of family, society etc. I swear this is not a Fountainhead influence, but I feel it’s really hard to be selfish in circumstances like that. It maybe because of my cultural and religious background that I think so, but yes. No George Bailey for me.

Gahhhhh I cannot listen to your next episode :'( Globalisation is a lie! As for your question, I would actually really want to meet Harry and Sally from When Harry Met Sally. They seem like amazing people.

I really liked the beginning of MoS. The whole Krypton part is cool. But I can see why it could have been scrapped. But then, I might have liked the film lesser. I actually really loved Shannon in Premium Rush 😛 I just wish he had said “Kneel before Zod”. It’s such an awesome catchphrase.
Loved Cavill. Underwhelmed by Adams, which sucks. The romantic moment was pointless. I liked the mutual respect thing they had going on. Fishburne was so boring. Maybe because I’m watching too much Hannibal. I loved Diane Lane. She and Cavill were the best. I really admired that Jonathan Kent scene. It will resonate with me more than that entire climax.

    1. Actually, I think you will be able to listen to the next episode. My intention is to turn the normal format on its head slightly:

We’ll be talking about the trilogy in order, and primarily staying on-point. If we do digress, we’ll be digressing backwards.

Great comments Nik – as always, thanks for listening.

  3. A couple I want to watch again: Charlotte and Bob in Lost in Translation.

It strikes me only now how much they resemble to Jesse and Celine – soulmates meeting randomly while they’re out travelling, having a conversation neither of them ever will forget, with the difference that they’re entirely platonic in their relationship. The most physical they get is holding a foot. Regardless of what he whispered in her ear in that last scene, and regardless of how their lives have turned out, I’d love to see them meeting again: talking, walking, being lonely together. About ten years later should be a good time span.

  4. I’ve always wanted to revisit Ferris Bueller and Sloane Peterson. I think there was talk of doing a Ferris sequel at one point, with the characters as married adults. Obviously with John Hughes gone, it’s sacrilege to even think of this any more, but I’d have loved to catch up with Ferris and Sloane when they were Ferris’ parents’ age and see what that marriage was like, and what those characters were like with responsibilities more elaborate than whether or not to call in sick to school. And what would Ferris be taking a “day off” from this time…?

  5. The film couple that I would like to revisit is Joel and Clementine from ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND. Apparently there were some future-set scenes scripted (but not filmed), in which it is revealed that Clementine ends up getting the mind erase procedure multiple times over the years (all of them involving Joel).

  6. This is dangerous because it could never live up to the original, but I’d love to revisit the Guy and Girl in ONCE. I know it won’t happen because Hansard and Irglova split and probably wouldn’t be interested. Even so, I’d be intrigued to spend more time with these intriguing characters. They’re written pretty thin but still have such life because of their music and what Hansard and Irglova bring from their own lives. So brilliant.

Great job with this show. I’m a huge fan of MAMO, so you can’t go wrong with Matthew Price.

  7. What Matthew says about that particular Costner scene…”that’s the movie they’re trying to make.” Yes! That’s a perfect summation of the same feeling the movie gave me! It seemed as if Snyder really wanted to make something searching and intimate but also had to satisfy specified summer blockbuster content. Which just made it ultimately frustrating to me.

Also, I too would like to defend Michael Shannon’s performance in Premium Rush. I thought he played the part like it was a comedy, like he was the villain in a Marx Brothers movie, like the whole dirty rotten world was out to get him. I don’t think you can really internalize as the villain in a bike messenger thriller. You gotta ham it up.

A film couple to revisit: how about Cameron Diaz & Catherine Keener in Being John Malkovich? I can only imagine that union has gone to wild, Kaufman-esque places over the years.

  8. Reading the Superman Chronicles makes me even more curious to watch Man of Steel (which I’m going to soon)… It really got some mixed opinions, and you two reflected that very well.

I also must say that I agree with Matthew on The Usual Suspects, although I’m not sure if for the same reasons. I found it dull mostly – although it has a really cool twist that I’m happy I didn’t know before watching – and I’m sorry for sounding feminist, but the fact that there was no actual female character except that one forgettable girl made me mad for the entire movie. It’s what spoiled Seven Samurai and several other movies for me too.

I’m not going to listen to the next episode I think, since I haven’t seen any of the three movies yet and don’t want to know anything before watching them. But I can listen to the start of it, so as an answer to your question: I’m going to go with a very typical choice, a movie that ended on a perfect note and a sequel is the last thing I want – but I still wonder how it’s going to continue – and that’s Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray in Lost in Translation.

  9. I’ve made it a habit to “come talk to you” but this time I had a hard time coming up with anything. Guess I’m not the rom com guy ;), which is the type of movie you first think of when you get the question.

So I thought more in the lines of which *film* (involving a couple) I would like to see some more of and then it was a bit easier. One couple stood out and that was Nader and Simin, the husband and wife from the fascinating Iranian film “A Separation”. I really would like to know how things play out for those two.
