THE MATINEECAST HAS MOVED!!
As I mentioned last week, I’ve had to switch the feed for the podcast after my old server closed up shop. The bad news is that I wasn’t able to do it in time to simply redirect the old feed and continue on uninterrupted. The good news is that with the move, I’ve been able to start offering better audio quality including embedding chapter stops and episode artwork. One further bit of bad news is that reloading all of the old episodes with all the trimmings will take time, so only the most recent twelve episodes are availible at the moment.
So, if you haven’t already, please reset you iTunes subscription to this feed to make sure you don’t miss a thing.
To the matter at hand, I am quite excited with this week’s episode. After far too much of the year spent talking to people on my own continent (often within my own city) I was able to pull out my passport and take the show across a wire to Ukraine! Lesya was kind enough to drop by to discuss Lars Von Trier, and while you might be able to pick up on a little of her nerves, I was quite taken with her and passion grace.
Here’s what’s in store in the Jack Morris episode…
Runtime
52 minutes, 46 seconds
Up for Discussion
1. Introduction
2. KNOW YOUR ENEMY– Q& A with this week’s guest Lesya from Eternity of Dream (2:11)
3. COME TALK TO ME – Fielding some listener feedback suggesting how to improve the show (7:34)
4. THE NEW SLANG – Review and reaction of MELANCHOLIA (14:52)
6. THE BEST OF YOU – Ryan and Lesya discuss their top five beautifully sad movies (26: 09)
Comments and feedback are welcome, and thank-you very much for listening.
Enjoy!

I listened to the podcast today. Although I was still blushing at some of my mistakes, it all sounded pretty nicely thanks to your skills of editing. And wow, thanks for the compliment to our national flag on the image.
As we were talking, I could already hear in my head what it would sound like when was done molding it. But highest marks for being such a charming and intelligent guest. (I realize in hindsight, I should have had you open the show by saying something for listeners in Ukranian). Many thanks for plugging the episode on your site and on Twitter.
PS – Did you like the use of Gogol Bordello?
Glad you liked the inclusion of the flag, but you need to answer this episode’s feedback question: What dvd/blu-ray are you hoping to get for Christmas?
I’m ashamed to say that I had to google the band’s name, although I definitely heard of it before. I liked everything about the podcast anyway.
By the way, I forgot to say that I checked all the four movies from your top 5 that I haven’t seen, and the four of them had already been on my watchlist. So, that’s a sign of my willingness to become literate in movies some distant day. I couldn’t recall them being in my watchlist because I have too many titles waiting to be watched.
As for the next Come Talk to Me question: A Clockwork Orange, It’s a Wonderful Life, and as for more recent films, The Help and The Rise of the Planet of the Apes. However, more than DVDs, I would love some new films to be released sooner here!
Don’t be ashamed. They’re a New York band with Ukranian roots, and not a terribly famous one at that. If you’re curious though, get your hands on their album from a few years ago called “Underdog World Strike”
Hope you get to scratch some of those films off your watchlist soon – and likewise that you get one or two of those dvd’s for Christmas (I actually just watched THE HELP this week).
Awesome stuff! Also, nice work comparing Justine to Melancholia and Claire to Earth…I’d never thought about that one before. I loved Melancholia and hopefully I can catch it again when it actually comes out in NZ later this month.
I loved the movies that you chose for the ‘beautifully sad movies’ section! The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, especially. I don’t know why so many people disliked that movie…I thought it was amazingly beautiful and its one that I’ve gone back to a lot over the years.
As for the DVD/blu-ray I’d like to get for Christmas (and I won’t, because my family never buy me DVDs haha), I’d love to track down either Sunrise (the 1927 silent film) or The Virgin Suicides. Also, I’d love to have Quiz Show and Strange Days. And I’d love to have someone order 50/50 on blu-ray for me off Amazon because the film still hasn’t got a release date here, so I figure it’ll just be quicker to order it off the internet.
We also don’t have a release date for 50/50, so sad.
I think you can hear in my voice how dumb I felt for not making the connection between the planets and the sisters. Hearing Lesya bring that up was the highlight of the show for me.
I do hope you get to see this on a big screen. It really is a glorious cinematic experience drowning in the beautiful sadness. Likewise, having the sound envelop the audience at the end of the film is something that I won’t soon forget.
I saw it in cinemas aaaaaages ago (when it was at the film festival). It was such an amazing experience! I got so scared by that ending.
Crap, that’s right – I remember now. That’s insane isn’t it? I can only imagine what the people in the theatre next door thought was going on!
Beautifully sad movies I like:
– After the Wedding
– Grave of the Fireflies as Lesya mentioned, what are you waiting for Ryan??? 😀
– Life is Beautiful
I should be getting to it in the coming weeks. Very much looking forward to it.
Oh – and it’s been a few months since I asked. Any interest in truning on your mic and joining me?
