Thoughts from your host…
Now and then, a complete episode gets recorded, edited, and uploaded and your humble host thinks to himself: “I missed something”
Such is the case this week.
Several times over throughout this episode, Petula mentions the term “fridging” in reference to the team of criminals that set WIDOWS’ story in motion. For those of you who are not nerd – or perhaps just a different brand of nerd – an explanation is in order.
A detailed and in-depth exploration of the trend can be found at Women in Refrigerators, but “fridging” is a comic book trope whereby female characters are injured, raped, killed, or depowered as a plot device.
Think Vanessa at the beginning of DEADPOOL 2.
Think Jean Grey at the end of X-MEN 2
Think Vesper in CASINO ROYALE (or any other in a long line of Bond girls)
That is the trope that Petula is referring to, and the unusual manner in which WIDOWS employs it.
As for the rest of the show, what can I say? For the second episode in a row, I get both an amazing guest and an amazing film to discuss with them.
If I’m smart, then one of these days I will get Petula on an episode where we can actually consume the rum and bourbon we refer to so often, but on this day fresh water had to do. Maybe I’ll make that a podcasting resolution for 2019.
Thanks for tuning into episode two-hundred-ten.
Petula’s Twitter feed can be found here. Comments and feedback are welcome, and thank-you very much for listening.
Enjoy!
