First things first: I mention this in the show’s intro, but if you’re a SoundCloud user, you can now get the most recent episode of the podcast through that platform and its app. For the moment, I am keeping it to the most recent episode, but if I happen to build up a bit of a following over there then I might pony up the coin to make more episodes available.
Now to the matter at hand. While it might seem to me like just yesterday that I was talking to Jess Rogers about THE APARTMENT, the truth is that it has been an entire year. It’s been a good year, sometimes a tough year, but definitely a year in which I have begun to understand what I am lucky to have in life and what I still want to do. Many people who read this space have been instrumental in both parts of realization…so thanks for that.
Speaking of thanks, I need to give a word of thanks to this week’s guest. Once in a while when I hear a person’s talent behind a mic, I get to thinking “I need to get that voice on my show”. That happened last winter when I did two podcasts with Ariel and saw how goddamned well-spoken the woman is. Not only did she deliver the goods, but in an unexpected twist, she ended up knocking Kurt Halfyard off his perch as the most loquacious single guest in more than four years.
Here’s what’s in store in episode one-hundred-and-twelve…

Temple of Doom does NOT have a PG-13 rating. It is rated PG with an added disclaimer.
Even though the film was one of the catalysts towards the creation of the rating, PG-13 was not implemented until the release of Red Dawn.
C’mon man – a show that clocks in over 90 minutes with so much discussed and your comment is about a minor factual error?
Would it make you feel better to say that I’m pretty much on your side in the debate?
I think you answered your own question pretty well. The reason there hasn’t been a great action adventure film since Raiders is twofold: first they set the bar so high, where is there to go? Secondly so many films that have followed either copied or tried to emulate Raiders.
Having said that, I have a that, I have a suggestion for an other side, Sahara. I’m not claiming it up there with Raiders or The Last Crusade but I would rather watch it to Temple of Doom or Crystal Skull. A really underrated films and so much better than The Mummy.
I haven’t seen Romancing the Stone for about 20 years. I remember liking it when I saw it as a kid when it first came out. Must watch it again.
Some of the films I am looking forward to: Ken Loach’s Jimmy’s Hall, Mike Leigh’s Mr. Turner, The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, The Rover and finally not exactly a small independent film: Snowpiercer, it was actually on my anticipated list for last year but wasn’t released. (2013)
So you’re looking for someone who doesn’t love Indiana Jones, huh? Well… it’s been a few years since the only time I fully saw all of them… but I have to say I wasn’t a big fan. *Especially* the Nazi film, I mean c’mon, those Nazis were just stupid and ridiculous. Maybe it was the know-it-all teenager speaking, or rather thinking, back then – but I remember being torn between entertainment and anger. I also remember hating the sword fight scene. At any rate, it’s probably time for a rewatch even though I don’t feel like it.
I’m excited for Blue Ruin, The Double, The Rover, Saint Laurent and Snowpiercer. Luckily, the last two will play at my cinema next month and The Double seems to be on demand now. By the way, my last answer, or rather the explanation was sort of a joke… I’m not sure whether you two thought it was serious 😉
First of all Ryan, I must congratulate you on the “Whaaaaaaaaaat?” It was v. well done 😛
For the summer indie movies answer, the movies that I’m excited for are:
1) Boyhood because Linklater’s a genius and I think unlike his last movie, this won’t punch me in the heart
2) The Trip to Italy because I loved the first one
3) Magic in the Moonlight because EMMA STONE IN A WOODY ALLEN FILM!!
4) I, Origins because it looks interesting
5) and finally What If because Daniel Radcliffe starring in a romcom is everything my inner 13 year old has ever wanted.
If I can manage to see any of these films before December, I will be a happy bunny (still haven’t watched Grand Budapest. You are doing it wrong, universe -.-)
Is it bad that my favourite Indiana Jones movie is the Last Crusade? Also I think the way Mette feels about Raiders is how I feel about Temple of Doom. Indians don’t eat monkey brains, goddamnit! Still, Harrison Ford is HAWT!
Please reference What If by it’s REAL title The F Word when talking to Canadians (which is still the film’s title in this country).
Summer Indie Releases I’m looking forward to:
– Boyhood (will probably be going to the NXNE screening in 2 weeks)
– Life Itself (who’s NOT excited for the Ebert doc?)
– The Signal (love me some indie sci-fi)
– Snowpiercer (Purposely avoiding trailers on this one, even though I already know too much)
– The Trip to Italy
Films I already saw (mostly at TIFF), but are still worth mentioning:
– Tracks
– The Double
– The Sacrament
I gotta be honest, Ryan, despite the extended conversation regarding “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, which I very much enjoyed, this episode made me DESPERATE to re-visit “Romancing the Stone.” Which I will do as soon as humanly possible.
Two Indie Releases I’m Looking Forward To: “I Origins”. Because it’s Brit Marling. “Land Ho!” Because “Cold Weather” was my favorite film in 2011 and this is Aaron Katz’s follow-up.
Romancing the Stone is even available on Netflix now! (you’re welcome)
Man, I totally missed HER’s connection to Sofia Coppola and her relationship with Spike Jonze. Fail for me!
Fun show. It’s been a little while since I’ve seen Temple of Doom, but I have to say that Crystal Skull is really bad. It enters with so much goodwill and squanders most of it. I want to like it, but it seems worse each time I catch part of it on TV. I will admit that Temple of Doom isn’t great either, but I think it’s a step beyond Crystal Skull.
