Frankenweenie

Last week, I mentioned that my tally or this week would be a little on the light side. At the time, I knew that most of Saturday would be lost to helping a friend move, and then recording the podcast at night. Considering that weekends are when I do most of my watching, a busy weekend means a light tally.

However…

What I find myself wondering is when exactly “a light tally” became nine titles long? Hell, had I stayed awake just a little bit longer on Thursday night and finished watching CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND, I could have climbed up into double digits.

Funny thing though – you might notice that this week is extremely heavy on repeats. That’s the sign that I didn’t have a whole lot of time on my hands. If you’re like me – and many of you are – watching a new film is a lot like reading a book for the first time. You want to give it your utmost attention, and that requires a certain level of concentration. If you don’t have that attention (and likewise can’t spare the concentration), you resort to reading a magazine…or in my case, a film that’s been watched before.

Anyone else subscribe to this philosophy?

Here’s The Week at Hand…

Screenings
GRAVITY – Revisited for podcasting purposes.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
HELVETICA – Who knew a font could be so fascinating.
THE CROWD – Inspired by The Story of Film. Some amazing imagery in this silent classic.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS I wanted a bit more Brühl
ROBOCOP – Anybody know how I can fill the screen when an aspect ratio doesn’t want to co-operate?
CHILDREN OF MEN – It had been far too long in-between viewings of this.
GROUNDHOG DAY – “Watch that first step – it’s a doozy”
HARRY POTTER & THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN – Still my favorite.
SUNSHINE – A splendid double-feature with GRAVITY

  1. I kind of miss not having TCM anymore, I feel completely out of the loop on The Story of Film series. I will have to see if the local library has them available.

All first time watches this week:

7 Up – Inspired by Kurt to finally dive into this series.

7 Plus Seven – Found it just as enjoyable as the original

21 Up – Thought it was okay…did not flow as smoothly as the first two.

The ABC’s of Death – I would say there are only five or six truly enjoyable segments (Ben Wheatley’s being the best). The rest are either average or just plain awful.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs – Felt more like a sitcom than a film. Kind of surprised by all the love that this film got.

Grown Up Movie Star – I have been procrastinating on watching this Canadian film for a while now. It is flawed in parts but overall I rather enjoyed it.

NY Export: Opus Jazz – I have to take care of the boy on Thursday night, so I will unfortunately not get a chance to see it on the big screen. Regardless, I really enjoyed the film.

    1. I’ve been looking forward to NYE:OJ since the moment James showed us that trailer back in July. Glad to hear it’ll be worth the wait.

PS – Lindsay likes to tell people that I’m the star of CLOUDY. Look at the character again and that joke will make sense.

  2. I have been intending to revisit Children of Men for a while now. Maybe after I get to see Gravity next week.

Firsts:Sleeper– First of Woody’s earlier comedies for me. Pleasantly surprised. I mean, that Blanche DuBois impression was everything.
    Prisoners– Quite liked it.
Little Children– For Kate the Great’s birthday. V. good.

Rewatched:2001: A Space Odyssey– HAL is creeeeppyyyyy.
Blade Runner– And Harrison Ford is hawt.

    1. My favorite LITTLE CHILDREN story…

At TIFF the year that film premiered, I was on my way to a screening of it. There are volunteers everywhere trying to make sure that people are going in the right direction. So when I got to the top of the elevator, a friendly girl in a TIFF tee shirt looks me in the eye, and without a hint or sarcasm asks:

“Are you here for little children?”

I had to grin at the way the question sounded and replied

“I’m just here to watch a movie, lady”

    1. If THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE doesn’t change my entire outlook on life, I will consider it a colossal failure.

I kid – I’ve just been hearing it mentioned a lot these last few months.

  3. As for your Robocop issue, you should be able to change the ratio setting on your TV to help it if the DVD doesn’t auto do it. Unless you have an old CRT without settings, but I somehow doubt you would still be rockin’ one of those, especially with the amount of movies you watch. 🙂

Only 2 for me this week, both first time:

    The Blob (1958)
    Mama

  4. I don’t really treat new and repeat viewings that differently. I may turn on something for a few minutes if it’s on TV, but in terms of full viewings, the process is similar. Also, if I don’t have as much time, I usually just put on a TV show or baseball and not a movie. I think that I’m probably in the minority on this fact.

Sadly, I didn’t watch any movies last week. I have watched two in the past few days, but those are for next time.
