So here we have almost a complete return to the normal routine. It might be an even more complete return to form if I’d managed to work in a screening, but alas. Nevertheless, with festivals, Raptors basketball, and weddings behind me, it allowed me the better part of the week to get back into my comfort zone…and as you can see, my comfort zone included a lot of first-viewings.
It’s a nice little mix of first-watches, if I do say so m’self. Some fluffy time-wasters, some beautiful indies. Even a classic or two. Variety is the spice of life…isn’t that what they say?
The funny thing is that seven of these nine were Netflix selections, they just happened to be culled from new stuff they just put up, or older options that I’d marked down a long time ago. I say “funny” because one of the remaining two came off my DVR, where I have a glut of films waiting to be watched. Maybe I’ll make that next week’s mission – to only cull titles from the DVR.
For now though, I’m off to watch a giant lizard.
Here’s The Week at Hand…
Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
DON JON – I see what people are getting at by calling this movie repetitive, but in my eyes it’s a good start for JGL as a director.
ROMANCING THE STONE – Fun times. More thoughts on this in Matineecast 112
SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS – One of the last songs at Rachel & Shane’s wedding was LCD Soundsystem. Seemed like a hint telling me that I needed to finally get around to watching this.
THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY – I feel like bio-pics have gotten better since ’78.
PAIN & GAIN – I haven’t liked a Michael Bay movie this much since THE ROCK.
THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN – So gloriously weird!
FLASHDANCE – One of those movies I’d convinced myself I’d seen before because I knew all of the key moments. In a way that was true, considering the “plot” that happens in-between them.
Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
CLOUD ATLAS – My third time around, I still adore it.
First-Timers: Neighbors, The Lost Weekend, The Third Man, and later tonight, The Cranes are Flying.
Re-Watches: Senseless and Fahrenheit 9/11.
Oh man – a week where you watched *both* LOST WEEKEND and THE THIRD MAN for the first time? Colour me jealous!
Not a big week. Firsts:
Don’t Look Now – Different kind of horror, combined with a drama. I liked it. I don’t like how they shot British films back then.
Father of the Bride – Enjoyable film. Among many of Diane Keaton’s rich people romantic comedies.
Father of the Bride Part II – I don’t regret seeing these films, they’re easy enjoyable, Surrogate Happiness as Roger Ebert called them, they do their job. I dislike Martin Short’s character though which everyone appears to love.
Fargo (TV series) – Up to date with it, so 5 episodes in. Really good, captured the spirit of the film which I just rewatched last week. Glad to see it is a limited series, it’s better this way. You feel the Coen-ness in it.
Next time you get a chance to watch OUT OF SIGHT, think about the way its love scene mimics the love scene in DON’T LOOK NOW – specifically in the way it’s edited.
I’m behind on Fargo, but now that a lot of other shows are over for the season, I should be catching up soon!
Only two for me this week, but I did also finish off season 1 of The Wire! Which was amazing, and totally lived up to the hype.
First time:
Honour (2014)
Shame
Did you end up watching Shame for that Lambcast that happened? I know a lot of people within that community were watching it for that.
Yeah, that’s exactly why I watched it! I’ve been doing my best to watch and review all of the Lamb Movie of the Months for the last year or so, just trying to stay active within the LAMB community. I’m not the most social person, so it’s my small effort to stay connected to something.
Hi Ryan! Oooh you remind me I still need to rewatch CLOUD ATLAS, been wanting to do that as my hubby hasn’t seen it yet. So PAIN & GAIN is pretty good eh? I automatically shied away from it given it’s by Michael Bay, but so long as it’s more The Rock than Transformers, I might give it a shot.
Btw, I’ll be posting my BlindSpot tonight, yes a bit early than the usual Tuesday post. I’m gonna make up my missed April BlindSpot next month as I simply could not find time to make it up yet.
I’m beginning to think that if you get Bay away from the things that go boom that he’s not as bad as he usually is. But yeah, it’s worth a look for sure.
So the blindspot that you posted is for May’s round-up, right? Just checking since I’ll likely start the draft of that post this weekend and drop in links as I see them.
That reminds me – I have to choose the film I’m going to watch this month!
