I wish I was posting this just a few days later.
You see, I’m the middle of a stretch of film-watching – and more specifically filmgoing – that is finally more in line with my desire to go to the cinema often, and seek out new titles. Up until now, 2014 has been marred by precious few trips to the theatre. Then again, I might want to give my head a shake when I qualify 10 trips in 12 weeks as “precious few”. Still, you get my meaning.
At the moment though, I’m getting my mojo back, and even beginning to better balance the new-watches with the repeat viewings. This weekend promises to bring more of that, so if I had my way, I’d have this post encapsulate…say…Thursday to Tuesday instead of Saturday to Friday.
But this isn’t ‘Nam, there are rules.
I guess what that means is that I have to put that much more effort into keeping this little run I’m on going so that I can report back next week with something to brag about, instead of logging that I’d just watched HIGH FIDELITY for the thirtieth time. I’m feeling encouraged by what the multiplex has to offer, and what ‘never-seens’ there are to be consumed.
Challenge accepted.
Here’s The Week at Hand…
Screenings
ENEMY – Review coming in a few days. For now, let’s just say “Cronenbergian”.
MUUPETS MOST WANTED – If someone tells you this movie is bad, stop trusting them.
Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
DAY FOR NIGHT – For Matineecast purposes and I already want to revisit it.
THE BRASS TEAPOT – I don’t care if she’s 24, I always feel icky finding Juno Temple hot.
AU HASARD BALTHAZAR – Perhaps my strangest “sick day movie” ever.
Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
DIABOLIQUE – This is how it works: One year it’s a blind spot, the next year I own a copy.
IRON MAN – It’s amusing seeing Coulson as a background bit player.
WAR OF THE WORLDS – I’m in the midst of upgrading my Spielberg dvd’s to blu-ray.
ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND – Ten years never passed so fast!
NEVER LET ME GO – One of the more underrated movies of the last few years.
HAYWIRE – If I had my way, I too would die being choked to death by a woman’s thighs.
57 First-Timers, 55 Re-Watched
10 Screenings
112 Movies in Total
I really want to rewatch Never Let Me Go but I wept throughout the first time I saw it. Dunno if I’m in the mood for doing that. And I started Eternal Sunshine on the day of its 10th anniversary but couldn’t finish it. Booooo.
Firsts: Girls Just Want to Have Fun– So silly but so much fun.
Fracture– Pretty decent.
The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)– So stylish and sexy. Who needs plot?
This is England– Really good. I should watch more British films.
The Long Hot Summer– Paul Newman <3 <3
300: Rise of an Empire– It was okay. Eva Green is fun.
Blue Velvet– Totally unexpected reaction. Read my blind spot post when it goes up.
Drugstore Cowboy– Liked it a lot. So raw.
Muppets Most Wanted– Dawwwwwwwwwwww. Danny Trejo is the best.
Rewatched: A Streetcar Named Desire– I know he played an awful person but oh my gawd Brando is so hot in this 😛
Fargo– I merely liked it the first time I saw it, many many years ago. I adore it now.
Anytime I see someone talkign about how much more they liked FARGO on rewatch, I get a little nostalgic. I loathed it on first-viewing…it’s an all-time fave now.
I’m even curious about the upcoming television show from FX!
Yeah, 10 trips is still a lot. For me, I’ve had 4 theater trips this year and I consider that “a lot” and on par with my personal goal of 10 trips for the entire year. I think I only had about 5 last year. The most recent one was also marred a bit because it was a consolation prize to the overbooking of the Winter Soldier pre-screening, went about an hour and a half early, and there were over 50 people in front of us (and another 50+ behind) who didn’t get in because they filled up, so I watched 300: Rise of an Empire instead, which I agree with Nik above me. Also caught Alien for the first time which was a bit of a let down considering how it’s held in such high regard and for how much I enjoyed Aliens. Maybe it was because I was sick, and my wife kept asking questions about it and wasn’t getting into the movie at all. Still enjoyable, but I was expecting more.
Wait – fill me in here: Why don’t you get to the multiplex more often? Money/time/crowds/some other reason I’m forgetting?
A little from column A, a little from column B. The crowds keep me from midnight showings, but I’ve had good luck lately, though they haven’t been huge blocbusters either. Money keeps me from most showings, and time keeps me from trying to figure out getting into any free screenings around the city (and probably actually going to them).
Well, you’re talking to the opposite here mate! Three years running now I’ve been to the theatre over 100 times by the time the ball drops.
First-Timers: Sound of My Voice, Bombay Talkie, Dark Habits, The East, my Blind Spot assignment in A Room with a View, and later tonight, John Leguizamo’s Ghetto Klown
Re-Watches: Trois Couleurs: Blanc, Big, Fantastic Four, Roll Bounce, and Night Shift.
How’s THE EAST?
In my brain I feel like I’m either going to love it or hate it…with little grey area in-between.
Well I’m glad you got your groove back, but I seem to have lost mine!
Only one movie this week, but it was in the theater so I guess that counts for something!
Re-watch:
Clan of the White Lotus
It counts for tons – you’ve nudged me towards a film I hadn’t even heard of. Well-played, buddy.
I’m going to screeners of Divergent, Only Lovers Left Alive and Any Day Now this week. I finally watched The Wolf of Wall Street Blu Ray and wasted an hour and a half of my life on Cloudy With A Chance of Meat Balls 2. Tonight I’m catching up with a few shows, TWD, Suits. Also watched the entirety of True Detective (also finally) which was awesome.
Not really sure what other movies I’ll be watching this week, I tend to just select something spontaneously!
