Thanks to a Saturday spent on the couch trying to recoup from an insane few weeks, my watching level climbed back up to it usual stupidly high level this week.

It climbed so high in fact, that my Stack of Shame has been whittled down to almost nil! An OCD habit of mine is that when I buy a new dvd or blu-ray, it doesn’t get put on to the shelf until I’ve watched it once. Part of that is because I want to make sure everything is hunky-dory with the disc, but another part is because I hate the idea of owning something I’ve never even used once.

Since Christmas, there has been a sizeable “to-watch” pile (helped in no small part by all those TCM films I PVR’d). Now? We’re down to three, plus an additional one loaned from an old friend/faithful reader.

I don’t see myself making much of a dent in that pile this week…which is not to say I won’t be watching much. Tune in this time next week and I’ll be able to explain further.

Here’s The Week at Hand…

Screenings
WANDERLUST – I probably would have enjoyed this more as a “renter”
GOON – #lindsaywasright

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
THE BICYCLE THIEF – Part of me thinks I missed seeing this at The Lightbox. If so, I’m bummed.
VICTOR/VICTORIA – If you’d told me I’d love this film as much as I do, I wouldn’t have believed you.
CORALINE – I feel ashamed this sat in front of my TV unwatched since New Year’s Eve

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
ATTACK THE BLOCK – The most joy I got in 2011 was watching people slowly discover this amazing movie.
ANNIE HALL – “My grammy never gave gifts. She was too busy getting raped by Cossacks”
THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE – Alright Fincher, now lets see you take the lesser movies and remake them better.
CONTAGION – That’s some freaky stuff. Why did I buy this again?
50/50 – Possibly the year’s most underrated film.
MANHATTAN – My favorite Woody Allen movie…in case you were keeping score

Boxscore for The Year
45 First-Timers, 42 Re-Watched

How’s about you – seen anything good?

  1. Haw, you just challenged Fincher :O

Firsts: Straw Dogs– Notwithstanding the portrayal of women, I loved this film. I love it when good guys aren’t all that good after all.
Wings of Desire– Loved it. Seriously.
Rules of Attraction– Doesn’t come anywhere near the greatness of American Psycho, but there were aspects of it which I liked.
Womb– Saw this for Matt Smith. Creepy, and not in a good way.
Ghostbusters 2– I had never seen this one properly. I like the first one better.

Rewatched: Say Anything– Ugh. Unrealistic expectations from life times 100. Bloody John Cusack + Boombox.
Ghostbusters– Got my little brother into it. So much fun.
Star Trek– I absolutely love this film. Can’t wait for the sequel.

    1. Has Finch even committed to FIRE yet?

Much of your first-watches this week leave me shrugging – except for STRAW DOGS(which is still on the ‘to-see’ list) and WINGS OF DESIRE, which I love dearly. For STRAW DOGS, I now dare you to track down the lousy remake from last fall.

  2. Ooh…Bicycle Thieves…that’s a nice first watch!

For the first time this year, more rewatches than newbies. On with the countdown:

    New to me
The Magnificent Ambersons: Not Touch of Evil, but not bad.
Los Olvidados: Bunuel goes dark and depressing
What Time is it There?: Odd. Slow. Pretty.

    Rewatches
Dreamscape: This one, sadly, doesn’t hold up too well.
The Incredibles: Pixar at its absolute best.
Blade Runner: This one holds up, especially visually.
JFK: Oddly put together for a film that’s really this good.
    The Untouchables: Make popcorn. Watch.
An Affair to Remember: Still as sweet as the last time I saw it.

    1. Re: BLADE RUNNER… One of my favorite experiences watching that film was at an outdoor screening they held here a few years back. they presented it in a public square downtown; a spot that is surrounded by billboards and ad space. To say that it felt like meta run amok would be putting it mildly.

  3. Highlight of the week for me (new that is) was seeing John Carter, which actually surprised me to be honest. I’d like to know what you think when you eventually see it. I’d compare it to Avatar until the ending that is.

    1. I find myself morbidly curious about JOHN CARTER. I might catch up with it in a few weeks, since (as mentioned on The Matineecast) there’s nothing I want to see after HUNGER GAMES until May.

  4. I only watched one movie this week as the rest of it was devoted to reading A Game of Thrones and watching my Blu-Rays of the show’s first season. Stellar work on both counts.

The movie I DID watch was Faust for my almost laughably belated Blind Spots entry. An amazing film, but then I expected no less of Murnau. It’s less poetic than The Last Laugh and Sunrise (and City Girl, while we’re at it), but its grandeur could challenge Lang himself.

    1. Email me the link for FAUST and I’ll tack it on to the WILD AT HEART entry.

Both the books and blu-rays for Game of Thrones are in heavy rotation at our place right now. Almost makes me wish we subscribed to HBO to be able to see the new season!

    2. I’m in the same boat. I get the most basic, crap cable because my apartment covers it, but you can’t get HBO Go without a full-on subscription to the channel. I would pay for the digital service to watch episodes on my laptop but I’m not buying a whole cable package for one or two shows.

  5. I too saw MANHATTAN and ANNIE HALL this week. Have both on Blu-Ray Allen Collection.

Caught 21 Jump Street – set to come out this Friday.

New York Stories – Coppola, Scorsese, and Allen = something to be desired.

I think that’s just about it. SAT’s took a lot of my time.

    1. Oddly enough, I’ve never seen NEW YORK STORIES, though I really should get on that given my love for Woody and Marty.

      Hopefully your SAT’s went well!

  6. Nice collection here Ryan, I envy you for being able to watch so many movies in a given week. I only saw like a total of 3 movies all week, eeek!

Anyway, I saw 50/50 at last year’s local film fest, yep I agree it’s the year’s most underrated film. Gordon-Levitt is just brilliant.

I saw SENNA, was totally taken by it. The other one I saw this wknd was Breaking Dawn… well let’s just say I wouldn’t have bothered if my friend hadn’t lent me the Blu-ray.

    1. As I mentioned – this weeks tally was helped in large part by barely leaving the couch last Saturday. If you want a laugh, find my entry for March 3rd – the couch day in question – labelled “Today, I Feel Like This”.

I l-o-o-o-o-v-v-v-ed SENNA, and can’t wait to give it another look. When I watched it, It felt like the theatre walls were shaking from the awesome sound in that movie.

    1. I know I’ve heard the title LET’S MAKE LOVE before, but am having problems picturing it. What’s it about?

(I could just click over to IMDb, but what fun would that be?)
