Remember last week when I went through a dry spell of moviegoing?
The drought is over.
Here’s The Week at Hand…
Screenings
DEAD MAN DOWN – Not my style, but I’d love to see Farrell & Rapace work together again.
OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL – I’ll have lots to say about this as the weekend goes forward.
Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (1935) – Should I bother seeing the remake?
THE ‘BURBS – “This is Walter” AHHHHHH!!!!!
THE GREAT ZIEGFELD – The Best Picture Project is entering its home stretch.
MIDNIGHT – A heavy contender for the best first-watch of the year. Yes, I realize it’s March.
KAMIKAZE GIRLS – Cute, but not my thing.
Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
THE ROCK – Inspired by Matineecast 79
LABYRINTH – Chosen for Matineecast 80
INOCENTE – If you have any creative instincts in your body, this Oscar winning short will inspire them.
THE TREE OF LIFE – Call me pretentious, but I still love it.
THE IRON GIANT – Seen it?
ROAD TO PERDITION – Was Daniel Craig always in this movie?
JEFF, WHO LIVES AT HOME – I sorta feel like watching SIGNS now…
Boxscore for The Year
44 First-Timers, 42 Re-Watched
12 Screenings
86 Movies in Total
How’s about you – seen anything good?
So glad you finally saw The Burbs, and seem to have enjoyed it. I’ve seen that movie sooo many times.
First time:
Mil Mascaras vs. the Aztec Mummy
To Rome with Love
Seven Psychopaths
Looper – The hype was immense, but I was so disappointed.
Brave
Hype is a killer, but Looper actually gets better on rewatch.
What’d you think of Brave?
I don’t know that I could take watching Looper again. So much of it was just boring. Almost every conversation in the first hour is just world setup. I was utterly disappointed. Although, I should have known better because I thought Brick was dumb too and everyone seems to love that one.
Brave was good, but it seems more like Disney movie than a Pixar movie. I was more caught up thinking about how the backgrounds in animated movies are looking more realistic than a lot of CG live-action stuff for a good portion of the movie. But I won’t go into that in depth here. Gotta leave something for the review!
Interesting.
I’ll readily admit that the hype surrounding LOOPER was deafening, but I love the way it blends so many genres together. It even has the cheek to knock its own angle:
“The movies that you’re dressing like are just copying other movies. It’s Goddamn twentieth century affectations. Do something new, huh? Put a glowing thing around your neck, or use rubberized…just be new”
As for Brave, you’re bang-on pointing out that it feels more Disney than it does Pixar, and that’s actually what I like about it. I’d be disappointed if the classic faery tale genre was left where it was so many years ago, and films like TANGLED and BRAVE didn’t exist. Little girls need to hear stories where the princess can take care of things herself, and isn’t laying around waiting for her prince to come.
Firsts: His Girl Friday– I would love to be able to talk that fast, coherently and like a smart person.
La Haine– Wowsers.
Jack the Giant Slayer– Haha, what a joke.
Thirst– Everything a modern vampire movie should be.
Labyrinth– I shall tell you about it.
Oz the Great and Powerful– All right, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up.
Rewatched: The Virgin Suicides– Love.
As I kill time before a podcast responding to comments…
You’re reminding me how shameful it is that I *still* haven’t seen HIS GIRL FRIDAY. I think there was even a screening of it last summer that I missed!
First Time:
Baghead – Enjoyable film, but falls apart in the last act.
The Puffy Chair – I now understand the appeal of the Duplass brothers. My mistake was starting with Cyrus…
Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1983 – Not as good as the first two in the series, though I loved the ending.
For Colored Girls – One of the better Tyler Perry films…but it is still a mess.
Re-watched:
Identity – I still cannot understand how this crap made money.
Funny that we both watched Duplass movies this week.
Thanks for the Red Riding reminder. Next time I have a day off, I might just treat myself to a triple feature.
First-timers: A Walk with Kiarostami, Treeless Mountain, Maborosi, Still Walking, Barcelona, and earlier today, The Sword of Doom.
Re-Watches: The Fifth Element & Swiss Family Robinson.
You have no idea how sheltered it makes me feel every week when you list off half a dozen titles I haven’t seen or sometimes even heard of.
I’m not worthy!
Well, I started making a monthly watchlist of films to see. Some of which are related to the next film in the Blind Spot list. I prefer to schedule things and then just do it. The re-watches are just films that are on TV.
I haven’t seen The Rock since we talked about it man… I should pop in that Blu Ray tonight then… “Welcome to the Rock!”
For me it was my Criterion DVD – and it’s still glorious.
Saw Road to Perdition on TNT?
Repeats
Road to Perdition
Contact
The Road Warrior
New
Dead Man Down (such a waste of talent)
The Big Chill
No actually, I was just looking for something to put on at bedtime (I watch movies instead of read) and pulled it from the shelf.
I’ve actually never seen THE BIG CHILL. Something tells me it doesn’t hold up that well. thoughts?
I knew that watching all of the Best Pictures would mean some rough spots, but…
New to me:
Born Yesterday: Put this on some sort of queue somewhere and watch it.
Quo Vadis: Historically and biblically inaccurate, but Peter Ustinov is a hoot.
Get Carter: Liked it less than I wanted to.
A City of Sadness: An odd film about an odd time.
In the Realm of the Senses: This film exists so film geeks can watch porn and pretend it’s art. I am in no manner joking.
The Greatest Show on Earth: Its biggest sin is that it makes the circus boring.
Night of the Shooting Stars: I liked this one less than I wanted to, too.
Rewatch:
Fargo: For a lackluster week, I really needed to spend time with Marge Gunderson, one of my all-time favorite characters.
I’m running really low on Best Pictures, and I’d probably be done by now if I didn’t still have so many that clocked in at over two hours!
I could not agree more on GREATEST SHOW: Parades! More parades!! Even MORE parades!!!
BORN YESTERDAY was a gem, and one I wish I’d seen before my trip to The Beltway a few summers back. I must revisit it soon…it actually even leaves me mildly curious to see the remake.
What year is “Midnight” from? I’m unsure which version you refer to.
