Frankenweenie

Not a whole lot of first-time watches this week, but with Hot Docs coming up fast I would expect that to change pretty darned quick. You can also count on me to finish off the Best Picture Project soon, which will bring with it five more first-time viewings. In that case, it doesn’t hurt that all five are readily at my disposal…be they on my hard drive or on my PVR.

Three months into the year, I think it’s safe to say that my viewing patterns in 2013 will lag a bit behind 2012. Besides the other projects I’m working on, it seems as though other activities have my attention that didn’t have my attention last year. Ain’t nothing wrong with that, I say. Lord knows I still watch more than most.

As for the last seven nights…well, it was a little bit of everything.

Here’s The Week at Hand…

Screenings
SUPERMAN – My first time seeing this on a big screen, and it was glorious.
THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE – Mostly harmless.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
CRANK – Loaned to me as a big dumb action film, and it certainly lives up to one of those adjectives.
THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN – Y’all were right; this is amazing.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
ENCHANTED – For Matineecast purposes, and a delightful rewatch at that.
LOST IN TRANSLATION – Ten years on, this is still handsome as hell.
STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN – It looks rougher than I recall, but sounds amazing.
DON JUAN DE MARCO – A guilty pleasure of mine. Shut up.
THE THIRD MAN – I scooped a dvd copy of the Criterion re-release and gave it a look with the Soderbergh/Gilroy commentary playing.

How’s about you – seen anything good?

10 Replies to “Days of The Week (Films Watched Mar 9 – Mar 15)

  1. Mostly re-watches for me this week:

    Firsts:

The Do-Deca-Pentathlon – The last Duplass film I had not seen. It is not great but I laughed a lot.

    Re-Watched:

2001: A Space Odyssey – 70mm goodness. My wife had some issues with the film…

The Truman Show – Is it too early to consider this film a classic? It gets better and better with each viewing. Plus it feels even more relevant today.

Shallow Grave – A personal favourite. So glad I finally upgraded this film to DVD. I actually sat through the commentary…which is something I have not done in six or seven years!

  2. Based on what you said, you are going to HATE Crank 2.

    Anyhoo…

    Screenings:
Vertigo – Thought it was decent enough, though I’m not really in agreement with Sight and Sound’s “Top Film Ever” rating.
Speed – Definitely a film meant to be seen on the big screen. Also, I really miss Dennis Hopper.

    TV/Blu-Ray Rewatches:
Ocean’s Eleven – Still quite like this film.
Following – For a film shot on 16mm, it looks great on the Criterion blu-ray

  3. In First-Timers: Classic Albums-Screamadelica, The Last Days of Disco, the Samurai Trilogy, Damsels in Distress and I’m about 2/3s done on Red Beard as I’ll finish the rest tonight. It’s a pretty long movie.

Re-Watches: A couple of Disney cartoons in The Tortoise & the Hare and The Golden Touch and Kung Fu Panda 2.

  4. I expected this to be nothing, but our new baby has been really mellow so far. So I’ve cleared out some items from the DVR. These are all first-timers:

Detropia – The economic future doesn’t look so bright
The Myth of the American Sleepover – it was decent but also pretty predictable, and the acting was mixed
Margaret – some great performances in this harrowing emotional film
Beauty is Embarrassing – fun documentary about a unique and talented artist

  5. I like Don Juan too. Depp playing world’s greatest lover seems like ideal casting to me.

Firsts:Out of Sight– I doubt Clooney has ever been sexier.
    Les Diaboliques– Creepy and wonderful.
The Devil’s Backbone– I took your suggestion and saw it. It’s pretty good.
The Full Monty– Awesome. Have been listening to “I Believe In Miracles” ever since.
Shallow Grave– Great debut by Danny Boyle.
    Witness for Prosecution– Absolutely brilliant.

    Rewatched: Enchanted– Amy Adams!
Star Trek– Cannot bloody wait for the sequel.

  6. Your mentions of Hot Docs reminds me that they still haven’t released that Charles Bradley documentary you got to see last year!

    First time:
    The Crimson Charm
    To Kill with Intrigue
Oz: The Great and Powerful – HORRID

    Re-watches:
    Pumping Iron II: The Women
Tigrero: A Film That Was Never Made

  7. A slower week than I like. Stupid work.

    New to me:
The Natural: Not in my top-5 baseball movies.
Cimarron: Is it a coincidence the main character is played by an actor named Dick Dix?
Winter Light: No mystery, but damn fine.
Kippur: Surprisingly engaging, surprisingly hypnotic for a war film.
The Blair Witch Project: I managed to overcome my motion sickness to get through it.
The Case of the Curious Bride: Background noise. Nothing more.
Umberto D.: Have you ever considered making a noose of your shoelaces? Would you like to?

    Rewatches:
    Nothing!

  8. LOST IN TRANSLATION – my favourite film and one which stands up on multiple rewatches. Just beautiful.
I think you were quite kind to BURT WONDERSTONE. Perhaps I was harsh – it only got a 1 from me and it wasn’t even the worse screening I attended last week..
