Like many of you out there, I tuned into AMC last Sunday night to watch the finale of Mad Men season six. The show’s conclusion begins a curious point in the year for me, a point which will be somewhat brief.
While I don’t watch a whole lot of television, I do have a handful of shows that pull my attention away from film for blocks of 22 and 44 minutes at a time. However, with Mad Men ending, I’ve reached a point in the year where I have no shows. Oh sure, there’s The Daily Show four times a week…but nothing fictional, and certainly nothing that I can’t watch over breakfast. The break should take me until mid-August when Breaking Bad returns, but for now it’s sort of a nice feeling.
Those hours that I’d much prefer to spend weeding through my ever-growing ‘to-see list’ are mine again, at least for six weeks anyway. Even though for four weeks already it has only been a matter of one night a week (Sunday), that one night was locked up with fan properties I had to watch day and date, lest I be spoiled the next morning.
With nothing else on, I clocked in a 9 title week. Anyone wanna take bets on how many I get to next week?
Here’s The Week at Hand…
Screenings
MONSTERS UNIVERSITY – What is there not to like about this movie?
Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
LES DIABOLIQUES – Seriously you guys, I’m done with baths.
THERE’S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS – Was Steve becoming a priest or being sentenced to die…cuz the way that family reacted…
Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
CRAZY STUPID LOVE – Still one of my favorite rom-coms of the last few years.
BEFORE SUNRISE – Lots to say about this on the next Matineecast.
BEFORE SUNSET – Ditto!
THE MUPPETS – Why do I get the hunch that sequel won’t live up?
SUNSET BOULEVARD – A lot of sunsets this week, no?
MONSTERS, INC. – It was very important that I rewatched this before M.U., for unexpected reasons.
The Story of Film
Chapter Two – My to-watch list is about to swell to unimaginable proportions, ain’t it?
First-Timers: Frances Ha, The Bling Ring, A Midsummer’s Night Sex Comedy, The Newton Boys, Zelig, Me and Orson Welles, and Broadway Danny Rose.
Re-Watches: Animal House, Little Man, The Dark Knight Rises, and later tonight, Lick the Star by Sofia Coppola.
I was happy to read that you dug THE BLING RING, though I remain cautious over whether or not I’ll enjoy it. I always hope for the best, so there’s that.
PS – Wanna guess who’s never actually seen ANIMAL HOUSE?
Never Seen Before:
Primer (my brain hurt, warranted a rewatch almost immediately)
12 Angry Men
Play it Again, Sam
Rewatches:
Election
Moonrise Kingdom
Michael Clayton
I was hoping to add Before Sunset to this week’s list, but my girlfriend is still overseas for the moment. We’re trying to catch up before Before Midnight hits a screen nearby.
MICHAEL CLAYON is an interesting choice to watch just for the hell of it. What made you reach for that? (Not that I disapprove btw)
To be honest, it was stormy and I wasn’t having the best day, so I wanted to watch something a little nihilistic.
Was your copy of THE BIG LEBOWSKI scratched?
Bazing! Good one.
Love your rewatched list.
Firsts: Brief Encounter– My heart, it hurts. New favourite first watch of the year.
Broadcast News– This was fun. Loved Holly Hunter.
I Killed My Mother– I want to be Xavier Dolan so bad.
Laurence Anyways– Ditto.
Rewatched: Who Framed Roger Rabbit– To celebrate its 25th anniversary.
Monsters Inc.– We think the same way man, even though I couldn’t watch it before Monsters Uni. And there were continuity errors!
The Incredibles– All this talk about Man of Steel and Monsters Uni made me realise how long it had been since I saw it.
I first watched BRIEF ENCOUNTER about three years back and I fell *hard* for it after that first glimpse. Sorta blew my mind to see a short David Lean film!
It actually inspired an interesting post:

Appearing on a Richard Linklater podcast at the end of July, so I’m catching up on a few of his that I haven’t seen:
The Newton Boys: I like the approach he takes to the period film and the unconventional criminals, but this was pretty ho-hum for the most part.
Me and Orson Welles: Christian McKay as Welles blew me away. This is one of the greatest performances that I’ve seen in a long time. THe movie is very good too, though Zac Efron isn’t amazing.
Wattstax: My one non-Linklater viewing of the week. It’s interesting to note how much this film veers away from the big concert and focuses on the African-American experience in 1972.
Who’s doing an episode dedicated to Linklater?
Orson was a TIFF film for me a few years back, and I remember being somewhat surprised that it just came and went without much fuss. Had to love that nod to THE THIRD MAN though, eh?
It’s a LAMBcast episode that’s a retrospective on his career, which is a daunting task. It’s been fun to dig into the few movies I haven’t seen. I still want to watch TAPE too.
There are so many fun nods to Welles’ films in ME AND ORSON WELLES without them being too blatant. It still amazes me to read how little money it made. I think it’s tricky to pick a target audience for it.
Five people talking about fifteen films? Good luck with that!
I have very mixed feelings about the Linklater movies I’ve seen, but I’m quite curious about those “Before” movies. Might have to watch them.
First time:
The Mighty One
Jack Reacher
Buy & Cell
And I re-watched:
Drunken Master
I know what you mean about Linklater. Some of his films have really rubbed me the wrong way too – namely FAST FOOD NATION, A SCANNER DARKLY, and THE NEWTON BOYS. But he’s also had some true gems like BERNIE and DAZED AND CONFUSED.
I think you’d quite like the Before Trilogy. Try to watch all three – then give a listen to our latest Matineecast!
The Lone Ranger…ugh and Wet Hot American Summer were the last two films I watched. Paul Rudd was very funny in the latter film. Talk about a turbo tongue.
Looking forward to seeing To The Wonder this week, but otherwise it’s a bit of down time here.
