Lots on the go this weekend folks. Talk amongst yourselves.
Here’s The Week at Hand…
Screenings
CHUNGKING EXPRESS – Cinematographer Chris Doyle was on hand. He’s certifiable.
THIS IS NOT A FILM – I really should have seen this ages ago.
MAN OF STEEL – This is going to be on my mind all weekend.
THIS IS THE END – How can this be then end, I thought this was the end?
Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS – Hey Bob, the lead is growing.
SHOTGUN STORIES – Different than what I expected.
Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
UPSTREAM COLOR – Remember those ten minutes I missed? Fascinating, but I don’t understand the film any better.
THE IRON GIANT – Always beautiful.
SINGLES – “This weekend, we rock Portland”
Very interested to read your take on Man of Steel. I think it could go either way.
As for me…
First time:
Galactic Gigolo
Safety Not Guaranteed
The Deadly Duo
Man of Steel
Re-watch:
The Crimson Kimono
Hopefully you’ve given my piece on MAN OF STEEL a look by now, but if not, bon appetit. What’d you make of SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED?
I did read it, but like many things I read, I usually get sidetracked and don’t comment. I’m a bad social networker.
I liked Safety Not Guaranteed. I usually don’t like indie sci-fi stuff, but I thought they handled the sci-fi elements really well by not focusing on them at all. Made it very interesting because the sci-fi stuff was always a variable instead of a constant.
Chungking Express is easily my favourite first watch of this year. Absolutely lovely.
Firsts: Serenity– This was pretty cool actually. Must watch Firefly now.
The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert– Fabulousity. Especially those costumes.
Beautiful Creatures– I thought it was adorable. It would make a good double feature with Warm Bodies.
Superman II– This might just be my favourite Superman film that I have seen. Zod’s so awesome.
Kinky Boots– Very fun.
Crash (1996)– Uhhhhhh I don’t know what to say. James Spader looked good though.
Man of Steel– I liked it but it was wayyyyyyyyy too serious.
The Lost Weekend– Brilliant. I wonder if such a film could win a Best Film Oscar today.
Rewatched: Superman– That Superman-Lois flight *sighs*
I counted myself super-lucky that I was able to see CHUNGKING EXPRESS on a big screen. I actually bought myself a copy of the blu-ray before the screening (since I found a used copy of The Criterion for a really good price), so I might be revisiting it sooner rather than later.
This week in first-timers: Masculin Feminin, Highball, Love & Death, 28 Hotel Rooms, Interiors, Trouble with the Curve, and earlier today, Take This Waltz.
Re-Watches: Ella Enchanted and Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets.
TAKE THIS WALTZ makes my hometown look pretty sexy, don’t it?
Rewatched PURPLE RAIN this last week… perfectly Prince, perfectly 80s
I’ve been humming “Baby, You’re a Star” ever since you posted this comment…so thanks. BTW, why the reduction in screencap game posts?
MOOD INDIGO was a highlight in a week filled with awesomeness.
I’ll definitely keep a lookout for it (if I didn’t already miss my chance).
I feel like I let you and Buckle down with the films I suggested for you…
Chungking Express is so great. I watched it before my run of Wong Kar Wai movies last summer, and I really want to see it again.
Four movies this week, and none were bad:
Rachel Getting Married – Watched this for the first time (it’s been in my DVR for ages) and enjoyed it. Hathaway’s acting is brilliant.
This Is It – I was hesitant to watch this after Jackson’s death because it felt strange. Seeing it now, it’s actually a really cool way to honor what made him great.
1991: The Year Punk Broke – This was a re-watch of the film that showed Nirvana right before they made it big. I saw it on VHS in the mid-’90s and remember thinking it was very cool. Seeing it now, I forgot how much it feels like a home video and how much it focuses on Sonic Youth. I’m a fan of them, but it’s different than I remembered.
Silver Linings Playbook – Amazingly, this was my first watch. I liked it a lot overall. It’s like Russell was channeling the spirit of Cassavetes like pushing it into a more conventional romance. The actors sell it, even when it gets kind of obvious. Lawrence totally deserved the Oscar.
I was really saddened by THIS IS IT, since it really gave the impression that Michael was about to pull off something amazing. That scene where he’s giving the band direction on how to play “The You You Make Me Feel” shows just how musically astute he is!
I vote you dig into the Matineecast archive and listen to Jess and I talking SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK during TIFF as we got to see it months before all the hype ramped up.
I agree that THIS IS IT is sad in a certain way because those concerts looked incredible. My favorite part was seeing how much Jackson was directly involved in every part of the music and presentation. He definitely wasn’t phoning it in and taking the money for the big shows!
I’ll try to check out that podcast on SILVER LININGS sometime soon.
Shotgun Stories remains my favorite Nichols. I could see you being surprised going back to it, there are similar themes, but the style is a bit more naturalistic that his later two films.
If you haven’t already, give a listen to the latest Matineecast where we talk SHOTGUN and all things Shannon.
First Timer.
Before Midnight: Just lovely. I think this is my favorite of the trilogy. Exceed my really high expectation, can’t wait to see it again.
This is the End: I think the making of this movie would actually be better than the movie itself.
2046: May not be my favorite Wong Kar Wai movie, but the man knows how to dress up movie with style.
Repeats.
Chungking Express: It’s great to see the movie projected. Probably my favorite Wong Kar Wai film, a perfect mood piece. Having a drunk Chris Doyle there to present the film is a bonus.
Police Story: Jackie Chan in his prime. Lovely intro from the man himself who keep saying “so stupid” on why he is putting his life on the line while making movies.
A Better Tomorrow: Gotta love TIFF trying to find the original print for all the Chinese films in the retro program, but this one has some of the worst subtitles ever made. Still one of my favorite movie growing up.
Before Sunrise: Probably the least favorite of the three, though that doesn’t it isn’t good.
Heh – guess we were at the same screening of CHUNGKING! Doyle made Keith Richards look composed.
