This week’s tally is a result of a funny little personal duality. You see last weekend I was feeling like death warmed over, which both last week and this week, jacked up my film-watching tally since I was bundled on the couch plowing through dvd’s.

However then, I found myself feeling much better as a new working week got going, so much so that in the back half of the week, I got out to the cinema an awful lot. So what we’re left with is double-barrell film consumption, heightened all the more with a specific picklist culled fro Oscar nominees. I could go on, but am feverishly trying to cut this week’s podcast so I think I’ll just leave you with this especially long tally.

Here’s The Week at Hand…

Screenings
CAFE DE FLORE – Yes, “again”.
A SEPARATION – I thought I’d be let down after hearing so many raves. Happily, I was not.
THE WOMAN IN BLACK – Rather creepy, though a circus of a screening with Radcliffe in attendance.
MONSIEUR LAZHAR – I doubt Canada can take best foreign film, but this movie would totally deserve such an upset.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
THE DEAD GIRL – An interesting watch, if somewhat unmemorable.
WARRIOR – A potentially solid idea turned silly. More on this tomorrow.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
THE PRODUCERS (1968) – “Let’s assume you’re a dishonest man.” “Assume away”.
THE KING’S SPEECH – More handsome than I remember, but still not what I’d call Best Picture.
THE HURT LOCKER – This, on the other hand, still holds up.
FIGHT CLUB – During my sickness last week, a friend pointed out that colds were the time for Fincher.
WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE – Criminally underrated.

Boxscore for The Year
16 First-Timers, 19 Re-Watched

How’s about you – seen anything good?

16 Replies to “Days of The Week (Films Watched Jan 21 – Jan27

  1. Colds are indeed the right time for Fincher, and Tarantino, for that matter. I didn’t really have a cold, but when I got my tonsils out I watched quite a few of their films.

Anyway, thanks to Downton Abbey (again) and some other stuff, I didn’t fit in much.

    First-timers…
Black Naricussus – I love Powell and Pressburger’s work.
Youth in Revolt – Interesting. Also interesting to see Rooney Mara pre- Lisbeth.
Abduction – Worst movie I’ve seen in a LONG time.
Chalet Girl – Felicity Jones is so lovely.
Win Win – Nice script, but wasn’t as good as I’d hoped.
Jane Eyre – Lovely movie. I should really get around to finishing the book which I first started in late 2008.
War Horse – I’m not sorry that I love this film to death.
Chico & Rita – Animated film nominee. It was quite good, but may have been better as a live action film.
RocknRolla – Mark Strong needs to be given a proper lead role. Pronto.

    Rewatch…
Quiz Show – One of the most underrated movies ever. So so good.

    1. Heh… Your mention of ROCKNROLLA combined with my post today about Tom Hardy in WARRIOR got me giggling and thinking about his turn in that film as Handsome Bob.

  2. I must see The Woman in Black!! Preferably with Daniel Radcliffe 😛 And yes Where the Wild Things Are really is criminally underrated.

Awfully slow week on account of me being lazy and as usual Doctor Who (which is finally over so yaay!)
Firsts- The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo– Twice, and contemplating a third watch. So bloody good. Anytime is Fincher time.

Rewatched- The Social Network– What the hell was wrong with the Oscars? I mean seriously- this film is flawless, flawless I tell ya!
Submarine– One of the best of this year for me. Not only is it beautiful to look at and listen to (Alex Turner <3), it just leaves you all warm and fuzzy inside. Serious change in rankings when I post my top 20.

    1. If you liike eerie stories, you will get a kick out of THE WOMAN IN BLACK for sure. My review of it should be dropping next weekend.

I thought you mentioned that DRAGON TATTOO wasn’t going to make it past the censors in your corner of the world. How did you manage to catch up with it?

  3. Here we go!

    New to me:
The Marriage of Maria Braun: A glorified Lifetime movie.
Repo! The Genetic Opera: Film for podcast.
Nightmares in Red, White, and Blue: A short history of American horror is quite interesting.
American Grindhouse: Lurid and fun and entertaining.
Le Million: Dippy and fairly lame.
Nashville: I finally understand Altman’s appeal.

    Rewatches:
All That Jazz: Still as good a musical as you’ll ever find, especially the last 30 minutes.
Dance, Girl, Dance: Interesting only because of Lucille Ball’s role as a burlesque dancer.
Groundhog Day: Shown for class. Always a great film.
Roger & Me: Michael Moore when he was still Michael Moore.

    1. NASHVILLE was on my lengthy “to-watch” list for the longest time, until I finally caught up with it last year at a Lightbox screening. The dude who introduced it, summed it up best: “Before there was American Idol, there was Nashville”.

Altmn is a director whose work I only know fleetingly, perhaps I’ll go on a bender in 2011 and up my Altman IQ.

  4. Here’s what I watched in that time period.

    New:
    The Orphanage: Spooky film
The Woman in Black: OK film, crazy screening
    Monsieur Lazhar: Enjoyed it
Ferat Vampire: Incredibly cheesy, yet entertaining, Czech “horror” film

    Rewatched:
Source Code: Watched it on TMN with my parents. My mom liked it, my dad (who’s not a science fiction fan) fell asleep.
The Hangover, Part II: I was one of the few who liked the film during it’s original release. I still do, however I was disappointed when I didn’t laugh once (i.e. the laughs rely too much on shock value).

    1. Hangover 2 actually annoyed me so much in hindsight that I’ve even found myself irritated by its original (which was on TV this weekend, but sent me scrambling for my remote).

  5. I’ve been watching Bollywood films on Netflix streaming recently. The best of the week’s viewing was the charming rom-com “Jab We Met” starring Shahid Kapur and Kareena Kapoor. I’ve become obsessed with one of the songs from a comedy called “Welcome” (for the curious, it’s about 18 minutes in).

    1. Bollywood is a genre I’ve long been curious about, but never known where to begin. One of these days I’ll actually raise a flag up the pole and get someone to design me a syllabus for that (after I finish off anime of course).

  6. The wife and I finally caught up with both Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and The Greatest Movie Ever Sold over the weekend. Otherwise it has been a pretty slow week. Partly because I have been plowing through Season 2 and 3 of Breaking Bad on Netflix.

    1. Shows like Breaking Bad actually make me want to write about more TV content on this space. Hope you’re enjoying – it’s one of the rare shows that keeps on getting better.
