While I have a pretty serious case of Olympic Fever, it hasn’t much affected my film-watching. Guess that’s the upside of everything happening nine hours ahead of me: by the time the evening comes, all of the sporting drama is done for the day.
What has been distracting me is television…specifically House of Cards. I haven’t had the opportunity to binge-watch it (though by the time you read this, I may be finished with it), and so keeping my eyes free from spoilers has been an Olympic effort all its own this last week. I’m actually curious what the timeline is on discussing the show openly. If 13 episodes drop all at once, would the opening bell sound 13 hours later? 13 days later? On shows that air weekly, I tend to stay off social media as they air so as not to learn things I don’t want to learn. In the case of something like Walking Dead, I tune in 20 minutes late…for True Detective, it’s closer to 90 minutes. Keeping my phone in my pocket that long is pretty easy.
But what of House of Cards?
It hasn’t been the easiest to remain unspoiled on the saga of The Underwoods, but in a way that’s part of the fun.
Rounding out my week of mass TV consumption – a week, I should point out, spurred by the fact that networks aren’t airing new episodes against the curious ratings juggernaut of tape-delayed Olympic coverage – is Masters of Sex, and The Wire.
Masters of Sex is a show I have loved from the word “go” but have nursed a little bit. Part of me thinks the nursing came from the fact that Lindsay and I were watching the show together, so there had to be some compromising and agreement to how much time we both wanted to spend on the couch. As for The Wire, I’ve started season four. I’ve had all five seasons for a few years now, but have been loath to tear through them too quickly considering how much I’m enjoying them, how much attention they require, and the fact that I know there ain’t no more coming. Loving it though, and wondering if I’ll ever stop missing Stringer Bell.
Lots of TV. So much so, you’d assume I wouldn’t have time for film.
You’d assume wrong.
Here’s The Week at Hand…
Screenings
THE LEGO MOVIE – It’s interesting being in the minority.
Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
BRONIES: THE EXTREMELY UNEXPECTED ADULT FANS OF MY LITTLE PONY – Wowsers, quite the sub-culture.
DEAD MAN – I wanted to like this movie a lot more than I actually liked it.
30 FOR 30: THE PRICE OF GOLD – Has it really been twenty years since this whole media circus? The doc felt a bit unbalanced without Kerrigan going on-camera
Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
SOURCE CODE – Is it my imagination, or is this film underrated?
CRONOS – One of the last few Christmas gifts I’d yet to watch.
POINT BREAK – Lindsay had never seen this before. Something tells me she was unimpressed.
THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX – Guys…the Criterion blu-ray of this looks splendid.
THE WRESTLER – I already have NOAH on the brain.
THE PRINCESS BRIDE – “Wuv…twue wuv…”
THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS – I also have BUDAPEST on the brain.
I feel like the more films and TV that I watch, the more that I want to see. So it ends up spiraling out of control if I’m not careful. Still, that trend can lead to some great viewings.
Just two movies this week:
MUSEUM HOURS – a really intriguing movie with a gorgeous look at Vienna
YOJIMBO – My Blind Spots choice for this month; it did not disappoint
Museum Hours might be my call for the most underrated film of 2013. Such a warm and wonderful look at the way we see art in our own world. Very happy I was able to see that on a big screen last year and give it the attention it deserved.
Definitely. I’m in the process of writing up my post about it. It was unlike anything else that I saw in 2013, and I mean that in the best way possible. I went to our local art museum a few days later during lunch after being inspired by it. It had been way too long.
Crap – you’re reminding me that I missed yet another great exhibit at the Art gallery of Ontario. If only I could get over there as often as I get to Lightbox!
I realized that my new job (since last fall) is less than a 10-minute drive to our museum. And it’s free! This is good news.
(Meant to respond to this sooner – sorry)
See, and that’s the funny thing. It’s not a far trip to the art gallery from my office, it’d take me maybe five minutes longer than it takes to get to Lightbox. Thing is, it’s *just* far enough off the path that I never find myself in that neighbourhood.
Maybe I should make visiting some sort of belated New Year’s resolution. Make sure I make the effort at least four or five times before the year’s out.
Sounds like a good idea, though I know it’s tough to get out of certain patterns. I’ve gone twice so far, and it’s been a really nice break. The challenge is not just staying there for hours.
I’ve been pretty tired all week due to a bit of illness and my sister and her husband visiting for a few days. I did get to see some stuff this week.
First-Timers: Gulp, Consent, A propos de Nice, Taris, Short Term 12, and later tonight, my 2nd Blind Spot assignment in Pandora’s Box.
Re-Watches: The Brothers Grimm, Million Dollar Baby, Innerspace, Top Gun, WrestleMania VI, and The Place Beyond the Pines.
Have you heard about the Twitter feed that is posting nothing but shot-by-shot screencaps from TOP GUN?
Nope.
Well it looks like Paramount actually stepped in and shut it down, but it got through the first act before the cord was pulled:

All those movies AND TV shows too? Wow, that’s a lot of content! For some reason I imagine you just hanging out on your couch with those eye-opening things from Clockwork Orange on. 🙂
I managed three this week, all first-timers:
Skull Heads
About Last Night (2014)
My Brother the Devil
The Holiday Monday last week didn’t hurt. I imagine that this week will drop me back down to normal.
“Something tells me she was unimpressed.”
I find this highly dubious. No one can be unimpressed by Point Break.
I think she had her own things going on and couldn’t fully embrace the awesome that is POINT BREAK.
Sidenote: i do feel like re-watching HOT FUZZ now.
