Here’s The Final Stretch of 2014…
Screenings
PATHS OF GLORY – Quite a chipper choice to see out the year, doncha think?
Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
TROIS COULEURS: BLANC – My favorite
TROIS COULEURS: BLEU – Least favorite
TROIS COULEURS: ROUGE – Remind me not to choose a trilogy for a blindspot entry ever again, OK?
VENUS IN FUR – A pretty good adaptation, but I have no idea what happened to the end
PRIDE – Gotta love it when the missus points ya towards something swell
Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Seen Beforex
NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION – I think I actually watched pieces of this three times before finally sitting through it end-to-end this year
WHITE CHRISTMAS – Of all the tunes in this film, I’ve had the Minstrel Number in my head for weeks
DIE HARD – Someone tell me why the last three in the series weren’t set at Christmas
SKYFALL – Is it time for SPECTRE yet?
ELF – “I know him!”
IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE – My heart grows three sizes every time.
THE APARTMENT – If I was smarter, I would have made this the New Year’s Eve selection
BATMAN RETURNS – I really need to start making this part of the Christmas Eve viewing
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY – Yeah, still awesome
THOR: THE DARK WORLD – Still my call as the weakest Marvel movie so far
The Dark World is such a forgettable film.
First Time:
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – Birthday double bill #1. A rather disappointing film.
Force Majeure – Birthday double bill #2. Loved every minute of it.
Antboy – Silly but oddly charming.
Out of Time – Speaking of silly films. One of the few Denzel films I had not seen prior.
Mr. Turner – It’s good but did not love it like most do.
Temptation the Confessions of a Marriage Counselor – Tyler Perry doing a modern Adam and Eve tale. Yep, it is pretty bad.
Into the Woods – Double bill with wife #1 – knew nothing about the film going in…really hated it.
Top Five – Double bill with wife #2 – This on the other hand was great!
The Interview – Did not like it.
ParaNorman – Enjoyable
Re-watched:
Captain America: The Winter Solider – Still my favourite of all the Marvel films.
Traffic – Forgot how well constructed this film is.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – Could have been shorter in length but still enjoyable.
Chocolat – Charming but forgettable.
Erin Brockovich – Man, Roberts is so good in this film.
Dr. Strangelove – After taking in the Kubrick exhibit, my wife agreed to give the film a shot. She enjoyed it.
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service – Still my favorite Bond film.
My daughters are getting a little older, and I’m starting to crank up the movie watching again. I may not get to 478, but it will be higher in 2015.
Begin Again – might not reach the heights of Once, but I still loved it
Big Hero Six – took my daughter and she was a bit scared, but it was fun
Obvious Child – all the awkwardness feels so genuine
My Neighbor Totoro – magic
Riddick – I’ve had this in the DVR for a long time, and it was alright I guess
The Battered Bastards of Baseball – fascinating story
Mistaken for Strangers – such an odd way to do a music documentary
Does writing a screenplay count? If so, I’ve started on a script for an action movie inspired by the “Die Hard on an X” formula popularized in the 90’s. I’ve been watching a lot of films of that style for inspiration. So far I’ve re-watched Air Force One and Con Air (both great films), and attempted to sit through The Rock (not a very good movie, I did an article about my thoughts on it: http://hitchcocksworld.blogspot.ca/2014/12/the-one-michael-bay-movie-people-didnt.html) as well as Olympus Has Fallen (not too bad, actually).
478? Wow. Don’t think I quite got to half of that. Didn’t count, though. Couldn’t tell if you liked the Three Colors series or not. I’m curious because I’ve yet to see them, but everyone else raves about them.
Loved ’em! Sorry – when I write Blindspot pieces they are less “reviews” then they are gatherings of the thoughts that rattle around my brain while a film is playing out
My ranking of the Three Colours Trilogy is exactly the opposite. I need to rewatch Skyfall.
Firsts: PK– I thought it was brilliant! Rajkumar Hirani is probably my favourite Indian filmmaker. His films aren’t technical achievements but no one quite tackles issues that face the whole country (religion this time ’round) with so much wit and warmth. Idk what you guys might make of it but you should give it a shot.
A Star is Born– My blind spot. God, Judy Garland was incredible.
A Field in England– What a trip.
Pride– Awwww. ALL OF THE FEELS!!
’71– Really good. I *have* to watch Unbroken ‘cuz of O’Connell. What a year he’s been having.
The Interview– I was crying laughing at the start but it somewhat flags as it goes on. Still pretty hilarious. Franco is a nutcase.
Land Ho– Like a less intellectual, more sweet The Trip. Adorable and warm.
Book of Life– Pretty colours doth not a good animated movie make. It had a novel idea but the storytelling was pretty haphazard. Still, more diversity in animated movies, please!
This is Where I Leave You– Too effing long. I’m in love with Adam Driver though.
Foxcatcher– It left me a bit too cold for my liking but the performances are great.
Clouds of Sils Maria– It was quite different from what I was expecting. I liked it. Great performances here too.
Force Majeure– Last movie of 2014. Loved it. I’ve never laughed so much at someone crying.
Rewatched: Calvary– Had to remind myself why it’s in my top 10 of the year. Job done.
God Help the Girl– Aww this film is cute.
How to Train Your Dragon 2– I think I loved it even more this time. Hiccup is a hottie.
My Fair Lady– What else do you do when you keep falling asleep while studying Pygmalion for your exams?
Guardians of the Galaxy– First movie of 2015. No regrets. It’s v. close to beating The Avengers as my favourite Marvel movie.
LOVE the new icon image!!
According to Letterboxd I saw 161 last year, which is down about 70 from last year. Here’s hoping I don’t continue the slide! [shakes fist at real life]
First-time:
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – pure fun.
Game Over – A French Home Alone-style film with a psychotic Santa
Meet Me in St. Louis – Blind Spot
Sabotage – the Arnold one. It was OK.
And I re-watched:
Home Alone – on Christmas with the family. It was fun.
